You failed the Credit Check because you have NO credit-history I'm asuming..

Get something like a Blockbusters account (this actually counts toward your credit history), or apply for a HMV card or soemthing like that.. Even if you never use them, the fact that you have them and are not in debt counts towards your credit history..

As a student, they will offer you LOADS of overdrafts and credit-cards; they wana make sure you have good credit before they do this!

Well how can any student heading off to university really have any credit rating if they've only just turned 18 and not had the opportunity for ANY sort of credit?? This is what you're not getting!

I'm not talking about myself, but if I was to get one last year I wouldn't have had ANY opportunity to get myself a credit history, being only 17 at the time. I know I wouldn't have been able to apply for this account, but I would have been able to do so on my birthday.

It's not a listed requirement that you need to have had credit cards etc previously, and so actually have a credit history, I've researched this.

The credit system works like thus;
When you have no credit histroy, you have a score of 0
When you commit a good act for credit, you get + score
When you fail to commit a good act, you get a - score..

Because your history is at the moment 0, some people won't want to give you credit history, because there is NO PROOF that you would ever pay it back, after all, there is no previous example..

I know this because my next-door neighbour works with the CIS, and works in the Credit History department..

No I'm not, your just acting a tad childish here; I'm just trying to explain why the bank won't give you a student account, there is no reason to be like this with me is there?

You shouldn't really need a credit history to get a student account though. Not everyone of that age is going to have had dealings with credit arrangements. I know I hadn't when I opened my student account. Due to my rent, fees and various other things being paid by Direct Debit SINCE I opened the account I presume I've got a history now.

But the case is, student accounts are meant to be more lenient, that's the point of them.

The way the bank sees it, they offer every student various overdrafts (over £1000 in some cases), and the options for credit cards, as standard with Student Accounts..

Because of todays "fraudster" society, they are not going to give someone with a Credit History = 0 an account that involves mass lending like that..

It makes perfect sense, if you just stop throwing the dummy out of the pram and actually think about it..

I know exactly what you're saying, but you seem to be purposefully ignoring the point we're making....

If banks insist on credit histories then how can people without one get help?

More to the point, how did I get one? With an overdraft in excess of £1200 and an option for a credit card? With no credit history. There was no check as far as I know. I just went in and opened an account.

Student accounts are different to normal accounts, a point you seem incapable of grapsing.

Indeed, I often wondered how i would get credit without having a credit history..
The answer is thus:
get a store card, any store card; even with a 0 credit history, they're not hard to get. Buy something on it, then go pay of the amount straight away. that puts a + on your credit history..

I get your point, but it depends on;
The bank it was applied for at,
What was asked for,
The standard overdraft of that bank in its student accounts,
The history of Heather's address (some places STILL check addresses as well)..

The credit-controls are generally lowered when it comes to applying for a student account, but it depends on the individuals circumstances; maybe heather has somehow obtained a bad credit rating, perhaps not fully aware of it?

get in touch with the credit-check agency, pay them a fiver to find out EXACTLY whats happening with your credit history, much easier than getting worked up about it..

Getting worked up about things is my first response to anything.

If you actually read what I posted, "Halifax have a strict credit scoring system thingy anyway (or so the lady told me)". They might go off addresses, yes, but I've no idea of the kind of credit history we've had at this address.

"maybe heather has somehow obtained a bad credit rating, perhaps not fully aware of it?"
"It didn't even give a reason as to why I failed, but I think it migh be something to do with being £4 into an unauthorised overdraft the other week."

That highly unlikely; I've never had going over my overdraft make me score bad on my credit (its important to me, so I check it very reguarly)
