“I’m pregnant.” She says this so calmly and clearly that he’s convinced she’s serious.
He drops the bowl. It shatters: rigatoni falls into a pile on the floor, mixing in with the shards. He figures he’s lucky that he hasn’t put the sauce on yet- something he always leaves last since Kara has an aversion to capers, an ingredient Alfred and therefore Tim always puts in his pasta sauces. But even without the added mess from the sauce, it doesn’t mean that cleaning up semi-wet noodles and pieces of ceramic is going to be fun.
He ignores her as long as he can, scooping up the pasta and the glass, wincing as he cuts himself on a medium-sized piece. He grabs a sponge without looking up (Titans always keep cleaning supplies close at hand) and wipes up the mess, using paper towels to dry the floor before he finally stands up and faces her.
“You’re pregnant.” He tries his best to keep his tone even, to keep his face from going paler than it already is. This… there aren’t really any words for it.
“Yep,” she says, waltzing into the kitchen. “I’m pregnant. I’m also sleeping with assorted members of the JLA, the JSA and the Outsiders. And nothing against Roy Harper, but there is no way in hell I’d sleep with him. Well, maybe in hell. Or if we were some of the last people on earth. But if I had a choice, I wouldn’t choose him at all.” She prattles on and Tim heaves a huge sigh of relief.
It’s the tabloids again. Ever since their first public kiss, they’ve both been hounded by the media. Rumors and gossip run rampant and nearly all of it is completely false. Nearly all, because Jaime hasn’t learned yet to keep his mouth completely shut. And the fact that Roy Harper (and Tim is betting that Cassie doesn’t know this, because Roy is still breathing) “borrowed” Dick’s camera and took some…interesting pictures of the couple. And “lost” them.
Coincidentally, a day later they showed up in all the newspapers.
“We’re also secretly married, planning to elope or you were caught in a jewelry store looking at engagement rings. You’re sleeping with Stargirl and Kara (and seeing as she still has a crush on your brother, that would make things a bit sticky) and oh, this is brilliant- you’re secretly lusting after Nightwing, but since you got me pregnant, you’ve resigned yourself to never acting upon those feelings.” She looks up at him with a gleam in her eye. “So, when were you planning on telling me about your affair with Dick?”
He studies her closely. “I figured after you had the kid. Then we could break up, cause a scene and I could take off with the baby and raise it with Dick on a secret deserted island where we’re waited on by pygmies.”
She barks out a laugh, and folds up the magazine. “This is…”
“Ridiculous?” He supplies, striding towards her, his arms outreached. She leans into him and he closes his arms around her. She leans into him.
“Yeah,” she murmurs. “That about sums it up. I just wish they’d leave us alone for awhile.”
“We’re superheroes who made the mistake of kissing in public. Of course they’re going to be all over us until one of us cracks and gives them an interview or something else comes along and we become old news.” He rests his chin on her hair.
“I’m hoping for that option, myself,” she turns into him.
“Hmm,” he mutters in agreement. He holds her tightly, running his fingers up her sides and down again, slipping slightly under her shirt. She wriggles in his embrace and finally looks up at him- to meet his lips as he lowers his head for easier access. “No matter what, we’ll get through this.” He breaks the kiss, whispering against her cheek. “I’ll never let you go.”
