The second time around really seemed to highlight how Jack is caught between wanting to do something he's good at and believing in the "peace is amazing" kind of mentality he was brought up with. Not that peace isn't very important but the way Jack is focusing on the tiny picture surrounding only himself an those around him really irks me. But that also lends him a sense of self and, realistically, someone in his situation probably wouldn't be going around worrying about other people's problems anyway. XD I don't know, but from the way that you portray Seph in your stories makes me think of how he doesn't seem to be the kind of guy to let things go too easily. I guess he's a lot like Hastings in that he's always more than willing to stick to something for whatever reason until the very end.

You haven't prejudiced me at all. :) I was more than a little reluctant to read the Dragon Heir when I heard about it because it's not directly from a Downey's POV. Maybe Chima was running out of Downey children? Now I kind of want to see for myself how Dragon Heir really turned out.

Seph in Wizard Heir is sort of portrayed as a rebel, at first. He's an orphan who desperately wants his family, and knows that he's been lied to, but no one will tell him anything. He hangs out at clubs even though he's underaged, in the beginning, kind of has this bad boy vibe going on. And then he ends up at the Havens, which. well. I don't want to spoil everything. But it is NOT good that he is there. That kind of changes him, makes him more careful, more wary. And then he's suddenly meeting up with Linda, who outright lies to him (he doesn't know how or anything, he can just sense it), and that puts him on edge. So he makes finding the Dragon and his family his mission, and then he turns to protecting the Weir too. So yes, he is very like Leander, in my opinion. His family means everything to him, on one hand, because he never knew them. On the other, he's seventeen when he first meets them, so there's a bit of uncertainty there too. And because of this, in a way, he gives the Underguilds' cause his all. Like Lee. Like Linda too, in a way -- because you realize that she really did sacrifice everything for the cause. But, I don't know. I understood why she did what she did, but she didn't think of the long-term consequences on the other people involved (Lee and Seph).

No, unfortunately even Seph isn't shown too much in Dragon Heir. And when he is... well. The Dragon Heir -- the entire plot -- suffers from lack of communication. If Maddie had just TOLD Seph what was going on. If Seph had just TOLD his parents what he was feeling. If Maddie had owned up to her problems... If Maddie hadn't tried to hide away... Well. I kind of ended up hating Madison, who is one of the two MCs in DH, so...

Dunno. I think Jason could have been handled better, too. Dragon Heir suffers from some real time issues, like Seph being in England on Christmas Eve, but then supposedly being in Trinity a day or two later -- at school. Because so many schools are open the week between Christmas and New Years... And one of the main issues, in my opinion, is that Jason, who was always a rebel, is sent to high school, when he's a senior in Wizard Heir, which means he should be finished. I'm not saying he should be in the front lines. But as an eighteen year-old... He doesn't really need to be treated like a child. Or in high school.

I've skimmed through Wizard Heir and it seems like Seph is always in a play for power or information. He's asking Genevieve about his past, he's being suppressed with Weirbane, he's hiding things with mind magic, ect. His circumstances would make anyone wary and clam up.

What really hit me was at the end of Wizard Heir when Lee and Seph are locked up together. Lee's speech was mind-boggling and might as well have been directed at the population at large for /everything/. It was a good speech. It made the concept that these two are so similar really pop out at you (if there was something to be missed in the first place).

But I was pretty happy to see at least /some/ Jack/Ellen appear in Wizard Heir. They are so sweet together. :3

Trilogies make me wary and so do long series. I always have this nagging suspicion the next book won't be /quite as good/ as the one before. I've been delighted to be proven wrong but disappointed enough to still be paranoid.
