And I will kill off my other journal...

So, I have just come back from one of the most entertaining evenings of my life... ladies, gents and fellows please go and see Star Trek if you have any facet within you that appreciates good humour, amazing entertainment and geeking out.

Go and see it if you are a hermit even... for it is all kinds of shades of awesome!

Having been involved in a fandom that obsesses and loves its elitism, much like trekkies do (and I'm not saying its bad or good just IS) it is beyond refreshing to see a film that doesn't take itself too seriously, loves to entertain and yet somehow manages to give you everything you could possibly want as a "fan" of the enterprise *snerks* see what I did there?

I know there may be more "hardcore" fans out there who may criticize but if they do I say now - BAH!

The whole point of the first series of Star Trek was to entertain. This movie delivers it in shedloads. And it isn't even the main storyline per se; it's the subtleties, the special effects, the phaser fights, the character development, the actors.

Quinto as Spock delivers as much as you would hope to imagine. A wry eyebrow raise in an elevator and I was a puddle of goo... GOOOO I TELLS YOU. \o/ And the way he delivers just one word -fascinating- must have had ANY Spock fan wetting themselves!

And I will get onto Karl Urban in a moment but I have to say... Pine I knew nothing about before the movie and was a bit meh about him. However he just sits so nicely into the role of James Tiberius Kirk. Impressed doesn't cut it.

Right ok... utterly fangasming over Quinto aside (and oh god him and Nimoy ajfdasklgsdj) the rough gem of the movie is Karl Urban. He is quintessential Bones. He is pitch perfect. He LOOKS the part, he SOUNDS the part. Utterly charismatic and utterly amazing as an actor in this well crafted role. And whereas Eomer was slightly sexy, Dr McCoy is frustratingly sexy as a very real foil to the immense Spock/Kirk dynamic. Buh.

The other minor characters are decent... less fitting so excellently into the shoes of those who have gone before them... more just fitting into the entertainment spectrum with light-hearted abandon (read Simon Pegg as Scotty and Chekov's wussian accent!! Absolutely adorable). Uhura is sassy but intelligent, and plays a significant (and subtly delivered as a whole) part in the character development.

Eric Bana who I always thought is a charismatic kinda guy gives a slightly lacklustre performance. Ack, that's a little harsh of me to say. Bana certainly delivers as the dark and disturbed Romulan... However this movie is not really about the bad guys vs. the good guys in the traditional sense; the plot being a solid foundation yet most definitely second fiddle to an even better story. It's not about those Romulans. It is about the genesis of bonds that transcend expectation or logic.

It is about Spock and Kirk. It is about Bones. It is about Uhura. It's about Sulu, Scotty and Chekov.

Everything and everybody else is a bonus.

Go watch.
