In the past couple of months I have seen two profoundly good movies.

1.) Girl With a Pearl Earring.
In my opinion, this is what cinema as an art form truly is. Nothing could be more perfect in this movie. Scarlett Johanssen blows my mind with the depth and maturity of her performance. I love the way longing and deep emotion that transcends sexual attraction is portrayed. When he pierces her ear and she flinches his reaction in all it's subtlety absolutely floors me.

2.) Monster.
Charlize Theron....holy shit. I had her grossly underrated in my mind. Her performance is nothing short of astonishing, the way she adopts not only the appearance but the mannerisms, voice and actions of a murderess, a rape victim, a lesbian woman in love on her own terms. Christina Ricci is damn good too. If you have seen this movie, what did you think of the scene at the bus station? Some of the best acting I've seen in awhile.

And also, I watched an old favorite of mine when I showed it to my roommate for the first time, Requiem for a Dream. Darren Aronofsky is a genius, and damn do I love Jennifer Connelly.

I'm going home to see my parents this weekend. I always feel strange about going home. I'm tired of already knowing how I'm going to feel. I need an adventure.
