WELL HOT DAMN! I love me some idioms.
Seriously. I've been learning as many idioms as my brain can hold. Few things seem better to me than being capable of colorful conversation.
I figure I will actually read the dictionary, and I will memorize as many idioms as I possibly can. Combine all of that with my curious knowledge of superstitions, and I am set. I could become either one of the most enthralling and scintillating small talkers to ever grace this earth, or the most obnoxious person to avoid at social gatherings.
Hell, I could even wind up sounding like a learned hillbilly.
I'll take my chances.
God knows, I have nothing better to do with my time right now.
A quick list of some of my favorite idioms so far:
*Shuck on down to the fraidy hole*: To hide in fear from something; to retreat to a cellar during a tornado.
*On tenterhooks*: to be very cautious
*Many a slip twixt the cup and the lip*: It's easy to make mistakes
*Eat crow*: Admit that you are wrong
*No shrinking violet*: a bold woman
*Character assassination*: to ruin anothers reputation
*Dead-cat bounce*: very little recovery after a loss
*Fucked by the fickle finger of fate*: to feel that luck is against you
*At loggerheads*: in disagreement
*Into the sauce*: getting drunk; being a drunkard
*As useless as tits on a boar*: Not useful at all; having no function
Those should last you for now.
