Everything seemed incredibly still and dark. At first it seemed quiet at well, but it became apparent that there was a low and steady rumble in the background. He blinked his eyes open to notice his surroundings were not as still as he thought they were. A medium sized orange-yellow robot ball was sitting snugly in its port to his right. Behind the port, and also to his left were large screens displaying his surroundings. There was nothing but darkness and stars. In the center of the monitor to his front, large friendly letters reading “AUTO PILOT” blinked in illuminated red. He sighed and closed his eyes again.
In an instant his eyes shot open again, as if he caught himself falling asleep when he shouldn’t be. Now he was standing. Cold. Wet. Empty. His hair clung to his face as droplets streamed down his cheeks. He told himself they were only raindrops, but he couldn’t be positive. He was staring straight down at brilliant green grass. To his right was a discarded umbrella rocking back and forth in the wind, threatening to blow away. To his left was a rifle. He halfheartedly shook his head at it, knowing full well the hours of painstaking work it would take to get it firing the way it should, after soaking in that soggy grass for God only knew how long. Looking up, to his front was an imposing gravestone in the shape of a Celtic cross.
His lips parted and a whisper escaped.
“Mum…Dad…A..”
His head shot up again, and he was staring through the sight.
“Aim…and fire!” The words flowed from him like an old mantra as he pulled the trigger, and watched as his target exploded.
“Direct hit! Direct hit! Mission complete! Mission complete!” The little orange ball flapped it’s ears in delight. He let go of the trigger and pushed a button, causing the sight to retract upward and out of the way. After pressing a few more buttons and checking his surroundings and monitors one more time to make sure that was the last of them, he reached out and pat the robot on what was perceived to be it's head, a calm grin spread across his face.
“Alright, partner. Let’s go home.”
