The sign, reading "Riverton Toy Garden" in bright primary colored block lettering, outside the store swung wildly in the wind. Inside, the walls were green and the shelves filled with whirring, twirling and buzzing toys. A train set dominated one corner of the store, a puppet rack another. Costumes of all styles and sizes lined one wall, giving ( Read more... )

Ennis strolled in, shoulders hunched and gaze set to the ground. He hadn't ever had the chance to buy for a little boy before, but he figured now to be as good a time as any in discovering what it is, well, little boys like. He never got toys as a kid. His brother and sister couldn't spare the coin. Not that he resented them for it. Or damn near anything else.

His eyes made the lazy climb upward, and his attempt at a smile ended in more of a grimace. Then he registered; orange hair, flashing bright eyes, full of mischief and mayhem.

"Fred!" And yeah, that were a real smile the wizard was gettin'. "I didn't know this were your shop."

Fred's head shot up so fast it was really lucky there wasn't anything directly atop of it. Since then it would've broken, and Fred's crown would be cracked faster than Jack's. What?

This was certainly something more exciting than counting the green speckles on the multicolored countertop! And the cowboy (COWBOY, not sheepboy.) was actually smiling? Okay, this was awesome.

"Ennis!" Fred grinned, straightening up and walking 'round the front counter to approach his friend. "Hey! Well, yeah, I mean, it's not mine, but yeah! How're you doing? You here looking for anything specific-like?"

"Right," he said softly, holding his arm out for a shake. "Just a gift.. Alma Jr's pregnant."

"Hey!" Fred crows, taking Ennis's hand in both of his and shaking it exuberantly. "That's brilliant! Boy or girl? When's she due? Congratulations! You're way too young to be a granddad. That's brilliant!"

"Hey. Do not say that like it's a bad thing." Fred waggles a finger at Ennis. "Kids are awesome. Do you want to see the puppets?"

"Kids are... awesome," he agrees, though with an unfamiliar word to his pallet. "Puppets? Oh, uh. Sure."

Fred just hunches his shoulders as he grins, and trots over to the puppet display a few feet away. It's a huge rack, holding mostly cloth puppets of all shapes, sizes and styles. A big sparkly green dragon crowns the many limbed coat rack, but Fred ignores it and, instead, pulls a wooly sheep out from amongst its comrades. "Baa."

Apparently, we win. cantbewithhim February 23 2009, 22:02:21 UTC
Ennis watches the interaction bemusedly, keeping to himself by the train.

"We're looking for a birthday present, actually," the woman said, while trying absently to tug her daughter off of Fred's leg. "Something... small," she added delicately.

Fred smiled, knowing all too well what that was like. That'd be why, after all, the Weasleys ate so many lentils growing up: cheap as dirt. "Is it a boy or girl friend?" he asked, all the while doing a little jig thing with the hopes of dislodging the pigtailed girl from his leg.

After that was finally done, Fred led Ms. Bluesberry and McKenzie, the little girl, over to a corner bursting with possibilities, each unbelievably fun while boasting quite nice pricetags. He winked at Ennis as he went by, and was then quickly distracted by McKenzie's request for a brighter pink set of marbles.

Ennis was still content to watch the exchange from a few isles over, a little taken aback by the wink, but he managed to cover his reaction with the brim of his hat.

Mun is still at work. Like always. And, so, is jealous of your freedom. imthedeadone February 23 2009, 22:30:31 UTC
Pulled into a quick game of jacks, showing McKenzie how to always ALWAYS best your opponent -- mostly by confusing them and claiming to see a moose where there wasn't any -- Fred was unable to stop one of his co-workers from chatting up Ennis.

A petite brunette, with dark jeans tucked into bright red cowboy boots, sauntered up to Ennis and smiled brightly at the man. "Hey there," she said. "Need any help?"
