Well South Dakota's been having a time of it lately. First we have the blizzard of the century where the eastern side of the state was mainly without power. Power poles were snapped off like toothpicks. There are still people out there that haven't had power for at least 10 days. Normally it wouldn't be that bad but the temperature the last couple of days has not gotten above 8 degrees Fahrenheit. The last couple of days I've been making phone calls on behalf of the Governor's Emergency Management Center to people who don't have power to see if they need any emergency help either with themselves or their livestock. (No power but the phones still work, go figure.) Most people have generators but some don't have anything but propane heaters. Not much light there. I talked to one man who was bored stiff. He told me to ask as many questions as I liked but to talk slow so I didn't have to hang up and make the next call. He was just sitting there in the dark... Ok, that sounds bad. Really bad. I talked to one lady whose neighbor committed suicide because he couldn't get water to his animals. (I thinking there might have been another problem there anyway.)I'll tell you what, I don't think I could do this on a regular basis.
But think about it. What would you do if you had no electrical power, very little heat and it was freezing cold outside. You can't go to a shelter because you have animals to take care of. What would you do to entertain yourself? Lets make this tough and say there isn't enough light to read by.
The second thing that happened is that the people of Sioux Falls, our biggest city, tried to remove a tall feed mill from the landscape by imploding it. The mill went up about four feet and came down about eight feet. It's still standing. Just a little bit shorter. Ah, yes. Sometimes you just have these really strange days. People are flocking to the now shorter tower to take their family Christmas pictures in front of it. It was the tallest building in Sioux Falls. I wonder if it still is???
