I am constantly in a competition about everything and with everyone.
Who's the better friend?
Who's smarter?
Who's better off?
Who's more successful?
Who has more hot fudge on their sundae?
I look around at all of my friends and I wonder why everyone else seems so close to one another and I'm just kind of there. I don't even know why I care, but I do. I see people becoming best friends and hanging out constantly but how does one break into the group when they are essentially already a part of it?
Sometimes I feel like a star. I'm a shining ball of light and energy just waiting to show everyone exactly how beautiful I can be. But all of the other stars are so distant that they don't notice me. Some stars are clustered into constellations that I will never be connected to but I just don't know why. Sometimes a star comes my way and we have a short connection. But like this shooting star, the connection is fleeting and pretty soon I'm just left a little more empty than before. Because now I know how it feels to know another star and have them know me. Now they're as distant as the galaxy is wide and all I can do is look around at the immense darkness surrounding me. I look towards the sun for inspiration. It is the biggest and brightest star that I can see. It is so big that even I, the little star 100 kajillion miles away from it, can feel it's warmth. I must look like a dot to the sun if it can see me at all. But I'll never be as big or as bright as the sun. I just sit in this position waiting for my light to dim and my energy to cease. Then I'll fall into the great darkness until I disintegrate and there is nothing left to prove that I ever existed at all.
