I just finished reading the 'His Dark Materials' series for the second time last night. In retrospect, it probably wasn't good timing on my part since the ending of "The Amber Spyglass" is the saddest piece of literature I've ever read. I woke up Christmas morning heart sick and distant, but I managed to have a very nice time in front of the fireplace with my family.
It's hard to believe that words on a page can get you so entwined with a fictional character and elicit such strong emotions.
