the way Sherlock treated each argument like it was the end of the world simply because he couldn’t understand that it wasn’t is a really astute description.
I like John slowly working out what is really bothering Sherlock and offering the solution. And Lestrade continuing to provide Cal with the same support that he's provided over the years; whilst Sherlock remembers times past and worries about his old friend.

It's very interesting to me that Sherlock seems to feel that he needs to hide his feeling about the sexual aspects of his relationship with John (even from himself) in precisely the same way as he'd need to hide drug usage from John--so much so that John assumed it was the latter that Sherlock was hiding. And it's so lovely that John was able to reason out the real problem--and to convince Sherlock that it wasn't such a deep, dark secret after all.
I'm not sure John really understands Sherlock's reluctance to approach Lestrade about retiring to the country--and I'm absolutely not sure which of them is right...

No, I'm not sure John fully understands, either... but then again, I don't think Sherlock's quite worked through his own feelings about it, either. It's a complex issue all around, and a bit bittersweet.
