-We actually started writing a similar scenario, but it didn't quite work. New plans are being laid.
:: CUT SCENE ::
"Dammit, Detective!" Kid swore. "Stop preventing me from jumping off of buildings!!!"
"I only do it when it you are being incredibly foolish." Hakuba said briskly, setting him down on the ground in front of the detective, the pale blue and green mottled tentacles hovering around him in arcs and loops without quite touching him. "Secrecy has drawbacks that only disclosure can cure."
Secrecy was about the only damn thing keeping this damn thing going. Keeping him going, anymore. He'd lived with the secrets and shadows for long enough that it had long since started to feel like a part of him.
Hakuba reached out, a clawed hand cupping the back of Kid's skull, bringing their foreheads together. "You need to tell her." The detective whispered, looking at him earnestly, his pale blue eyes serpent silted. "Hovering in the middle, not having a clear answer... it hurts more. It festers and becomes more painful because it does not -heal-."
Dammit. Kid swallowed. Hakuba would know, wouldn't he? Hakuba liked him, he liked Aoko and Aoko... Well, there was the question. And he would never know if Aoko would... could like him without the masks, unless he took the gamble, would he?
~insert Gordian Knot legend here~ lies tangle it up, etc
Perhaps the only answer he could give was to do what Alexander had done and cut the whole damn thing open.
".... Okay." He agreed softly. "And I'm sorry." He'd tried not to hurt Hakuba, and in the process he'd only danced around things and hurt the detective more.
Hakuba smiled back, but it was a sort of broken, crooked smile. "You tried. And I thank you for that." Tried to fix things, tried to become friends. The hand cupping his head slid upwards, grabbing the rim of the hat, the other hand circling around the monocle. Kid put his hand over Hakuba's, not quite lacing the fingers together. "I have got your back here." Hakuba assured him quietly, his tone serious and confidant.
"Thank you." Kid said quietly in return.
Then both the hat and the monocle were pulled off, baring his face, his identity in the dim light.
He was vaguely aware of Hakuba looking him without surprise, just a sense of acceptance, but he only had eyes for Aoko. Aoko, his best friend, his closest friend, who was staring at him like he was a complete stranger. He mustered up a smile, but it felt weak, the barest of thin shields. "... Hi."
"Oh my god." Aoko whispered, her hands clasped up near her mouth. "Kaito... you're the Kid... and you got -shot-, you got shot and I was sitting here mocking you because you got shot and you're -injured- and I just sat there and nattered away and WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY ANYTHING YOU BIG JERK!? Ohmygod... "
She stood there, tears starting to trickle down her face as she stared at him. His smile stayed in place, it's thin defence holding steady. "Because you hate me." He said simply, eyes dropping away, unable to maintain the contact as he accepting her anger. He'd hurt her, not the same way he'd hurt Hakuba, but over and over again for over a year now with the lies and the deceptions. He'd hurt her by taking away her father from her night after night. He'd hurt her by using her to accomplish his heists.
And at the moment, he couldn't think of a single thing to say in his defence for that.

The reason for it is because... what happens next? It's one thing for Aoko to accept the fact that Kid = Kaito and he lied to her for ages in the heat of the moment. But what happens once things calm down? Will it still be as easy for her to accept?
-there's no time for her to -process- it.
And where does that leave Hakuba? Drifting in the wind? Does he ever get turned back to normal?
And what about Nakamori? He's saw Kid get shot out of the sky and has a dead guy on his hands who claimed to have killed the Kid. Who killed Snake?
The scene above is the easy answer and does the 'Yay Twue Wuv' cliche, which annoys us. It's called 'Gordian Knot' because it's -supposed- to be twisted and confusing, dangit!
So it's the harder, longer route for us. #^^# And hopefully it'll be the better route as well. ^^;;
