BAH! It has come to my attention that I, the supposed pirate fiend, was using the incorrect title for Shin-sin-fa's duties on past ships! *GASP*
Yes. I will NEVER AGAIN listen to my friend John when he tells me what something means. I don't care how many books he's read, I'll read them myself. :P I feel like a big idiot. I think I even messed this up in a story too.
Correct term for what Shin-sin-fa was doing is 'yeoman.' The term I was using, which was 'quartermaster,' is actually correct--but only for military, not for general nautical use.

yeoman 4. (Naut.) An interior officer under the boatswain, gunner, or carpenters, charged with the stowage, account, and distribution of the stores.
quartermaster 1. (Mil.) An officer whose duty is to provide quarters, provisions, storage, clothing, fuel, stationery, and transportation for a regiment or other body of troops, and superintend the supplies.
2. (Naut.) A petty officer who attends to the helm, binnacle, signals, and the like, under the direction of the master. --Totten.
Shin-sin-fa has never before had the chance to attend to the helm, though he possibly has been set to signaling. :) SO... please pretend like I have been saying 'yeoman' instead of 'quartermaster.' I actually am not sure about the olden term just yet...I KNOW that's not it. I'm going to go read up more on stations today.
