I know people think I'm a bit nuts when it comes to urban design, I know the Europeans are, but I think this Dutch idea has possibilities. The concept has been labeled Woonerven, but it basically boils down to getting rid of as many of the divisions between streets and the sidewalks. By mixing all the traffic up, drivers slow down and pedestrians have a safer environment. Not to mention we all get someplace that is a hell of a lot more pleasant.
Draw a box from University, over to Jefferson, and from the 9th Street to 16th and create a walkable human scale mixed use district that would probably be the single largest block of such territory in the state.
