My neighbor got shot last night. Isn't that fun? Or terrifying, take your pick.
A copy and paste:
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Buffalo man is in critical condition following a late night shooting near the University Heights neighborhood.
It happened just before midnight on (name removed) Avenue.
Police say 16-year-old Daquan Hunter and 19-year-old Irving Mooreman shot 61-year-old (name removed) after robbing him at gunpoint.
Both are charged with attempted murder, robbery in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon.
This guy lives just a few houses down from us, on the same side of the street. We got home from our friends' house around 10:45 last night. I put Connor to bed, and Chuck let the dogs outside. Just after midnight, Chuck went out to let the dogs back in. He came back inside saying that there were cops and ambulances outside and something was going on. We ran outside, and found out that the neighbor had been shot. No one knew any details, and this story is the most I've heard so far.
A fucking 16 and 19 year old. I don't even have the words for it. I'm confused, and angry, and sad.
It's so much worse that they actually shot him, rather than just robbing him at gunpoint. That shows a certain, very scary, level of sociopath-ness. I mean, really, it's one thing to rob someone and threaten them with a gun. It takes things to a whole other level to actually cross the line and shoot someone, to be willing to kill another person and to actually try to. It displays a complete and utter disregard for another human life, a lack of empathy, and a lack of regard for the consequences of your actions. And for that type of behavior to be present in a 16 and a 19 year old really scares the living hell out of me.
And of course, it's kind of disconcerting that this happened while I was home, sitting in my living room, just a couple of houses away, with my dogs outside and my child sleeping upstairs. The "what if"s run rampant, you know? Why did they pick that house? Did they know him, or was it random? Could some small change of circumstance have made it MY house they came to? Are they the same approximately 16 and 18 year olds who are currently wanted for robbing a postal carrier at gun point in the same general area a couple months ago? What would have happened had I been taking the trash to the curb or walking to the corner store or whatever just before midnight? I'm kind of glad we were awake and had the lights all on and two big dogs out in the yard, at least that's a bit of a deterrant for random break-ins.
Jesus. What the fucking hell is wrong with people? I don't even know what else to say. I can't decide if I hope for them to rot in jail for the next 20 years, or if I hope they are "rehabilitated" and can be remorseful and go on to become decent memebers of society. Considering that they tried to kill someone just a few yards away from my home and my sleeping child, I think I'd be happier with life in prison.
