Jonas Brothers Recent Live Performances

The Jonas Brothers comeback this year has been a joy. Maybe this is mostly because back at the height of their popularity in 2009, it was still "uncool" to like them. They didn't have a single song on mainstream radio. They certainly didn't any credibility as accomplished artists, even with platinum & gold records. And now the boys are in their 30s in seemingly loving, balanced relationships, while accomplishing huge goals on a nationwide stage. They are fully fledged adults realizing their dreams, and they are once again inspiring me to think bigger. So cheers to that.

Their most recent nationwide performances were at the AMAs and the MTV VMAs. I loved how in both performances, they didn't try to over-sell themselves. They chose moves and the stage set from their current tour for the AMA performance, and got the crowd involved for an immersive but relatable performance that focused on having a good time. I have always respected their humility in the face of the extremely flashy and elaborate set-ups of other acts. Besides the fact that Joe's shirt looked like it had bird poop on it, I was glad that it felt like I was back at the Happiness Begins Tour. For the VMAs, Joe really brought it with that voice.

I do wonder if they could get away with such a simple, music-focused performance if they were women, though. It seems like there is a standard whereby women have to have the most outrageous outfits, hoards of back-up dancers, or big angsty ballads in order to perform at such events.
