So...a couple night ago Manda had a post up about the end of New Orleans. I've been on a bit of a break from current events so I had no idea what was going on so I called her and got the info on Katrina. Now, for those of you that don't know, I was born in New Orleans, and I lived the first 7 years of my life in a suburb about half an hour away. So, needless to say, the Weather Channel was my station of choice yesterday. I decided early on I was much better off just listening and not watching. At about 10:30am my time (eastern) the first levy breached (the one by the french quarter). Well, good news came when they announced that the eye had swung a little east and now only the western edge of the eye would hit the city, and I had a momentary sigh of relief until they finished their statement with "and is now headed straight toward Slidell." I have to say the phrase "my heart sank" is the most accurate description of the feeling I had at that moment. Slidell would be that suburb I mentioned earlier where I grew up. But still, I was fine all day. I knew what was going on because I listened while I did other things. I'm sure the distractions were helping too. Then about 7pm, when Tony and I sit down to dinner (we ate on the couch last night because we've been painting the kitchen and the table is not usable right now) they show "video from earlier" of Slidell followed by more recent images to asses the damage...
There are no words to describe the feeling of watching your childhood home be destroyed on national television, and then seeing it lying there in ruin.
