i love new york city.
it's my first night alone in the city tonite, and so far, all is good. the past couple of days have been somewhat stressful--considering that i had yet to figure out where i would be living and what i would be doing with myself (besides the internship) in the city until today. i had joked that i'd be living in penn station right up until i left, but since coming here and desperately looking for a place to live with my parents, i realized that there was a slight possibility that both my procrastination and my overly laid-back attitude may have made that joke a reality.
fortunately, by last nite, i had two options: a [very nice] place on the upper west side with a nice couple in their late twenties and a [decent] place in the east village, close to the lower east side, with a couple of nyu grad students studying film. until 11 a.m. this morning, i had committed to the place on the upper west side--elevator, air conditioning, and my own bathroom--for more expensive rent than i had intended. then, completely last minute, i changed my mind. even though the apartment and the couple i would be living with were nicer than i could imagine, after a quick backup visit to the place in the east village, i decided that a couple sacrifices wouldn't be too bad. this place doesn't have air conditioning or formal internet service (i'll probably end up bumming wireless off someone), but the area rocks, the guy i dealt with was good people, and i'm sure the roommate situation will (hopefully) unfold well. what makes this even better is that, besides living where i originally wanted to live (the east village) when i found out i'd be spending the summer here, the rent is a ridiculously great deal: less than $500 a month for the two months that i'll be here. a couple months ago i wouldn't have understood the value in that, but after this desperate search for housing, it all means so much now.
however, i can't move in until sunday, and since i had made this decision last minute, most hotels in the city were either overbooked or overpriced. so, i'm currently staying in a hostel in chelsea. and it's the shit. i'm rooming with three kids from england (all of whom have referred to me as "lad" or "mate"--i thought this was an australian thing, but either way, it's all good), a kid from korea, and a kid doing what i'm doing. they're all good guys, and i'm looking forward to whatever's going on tomorrow. i'd like to give my fake a try here--the bars seem like a damn good time--although i'm worried getting busted could really fuck me over. i'm willing to take my chances, though.
i've also gotta take care of a couple random things--find a gym close to the apartment, find the nearest laundromat, figure out how i'm going to get my shit from the hostel to the apartment on sunday, figure out the best walking/subway/bus route from the apartment to the miramax office, and perhaps, just maybe, find a job (is this or isn't this necessary?).
it was nice to hear from some people (i was especially excited to hear from one of my favorite people in the world--kate levinson), and there's no doubt that, as soon as i'm settled in the apartment, i'll be calling everybody up to check up on them.
cape cod's just around the corner. i can't wait.
new york city is going great, but i do miss all ya'll back home. i wish everyone were here. and perhaps some of ya'll from BG and ithaca will get a chance to come by? everybody's welcome, as i've said over and over again (probably too many times).
finally, even though i've said this before, it's probably more important that i do now... i'll try to update more often.
