Tell me about couples and surfing!

May 30, 2006 11:03

I'm about to write my next Wired column. I've decided it's going to be about the effect of information addiction on the life of couples. And I'd like your help, because I don't want it just to be me going on about me. But naturally it starts with me, what I've observed in my own life. Here's a photo of me and my then-girlfriend (she's now happily ( Read more... )

I am single so I cannot speak to myself, but it amuses me so much when couples I know sometimes communicate with each other via instant messaging because they are too lazy to walk to their respective rooms.

Hisae and I often send each other e mails when we're in the same room! Usually with URLs...

hahaha.
would be even funnier if people sitting opposite each other each had a webcam and chatted that way.

That's what instant messages are for! It's also fun to hang out on IRC as a couple, with the "backdoor" of verbal communication. Kind of like being at a party and being telepathically linked to your g/f.

What really sucks is when you're both infomaniacs and there's only one computer...

Two friends of mine spend long hours in the same room, each of them with a Mac computer, diving into the Internet, listening to their keyboard's kind-of-boiling buzz. Sometimes they listen to their I-pods while surfing the internet or working, each of them has one. They have voIp phone too, and they phone each other from separate rooms so as not to shout out. You see one of them whispering to the other through the phone, next room. They're both quite tech addicts, so the usual sounds at their house are those of clicks, keyboards, ink-jet printers, microwave, mobile phone melodies, plasma TV...

I've just realized that you can know about some people's life from the typology of noises you hear at their house (as well as from what they have at the fridge).

I have realized too that I had not written a word in English for ages!

I'll do that on occasion

- It's a big house. I need information, she's in the office, I'm upstairs. Yelling is out if the kids are asleep. I could walk downstairs and ask, but there is this communication channel, something like those home intercoms that seemed to be the rage in the 70s.

- I use it to transmit information - a URL, a pic, whatever is too dense to be conveyed verbally.
