Winter break would come in a few more weeks. It’s Christmas time again and it’s freakin cold (‘but not as cold as New York, babe’, Kris had said). One night, Kris surprised him with a round trip ticket to New York for the week. He said, it was better for him to come and visit instead of Kris coming to Conway because they couldn’t spend much time alone as long as they really wanted because of the curious eyes in the mansion.

Adam could spend his first week of break in NY while Kris’ parents come the following week to spend their Christmas there. Adam could just tell his mother that he needs to be at the school for another week after the classes finally end for break. He couldn’t think of a better excuse because he is more than excited to hop the plane and be with his boyfriend again.

He started to pack up his things as early as possible so he didn’t forget anything. When the day came and the plane finally landed at the NY airport, he feels even more giddy and excited than he was already; if that’s even possible.

He literally runs from the conveyer to the airport exit after impatiently waiting for his bag to come out. When he saw Kris standing there, craning his neck trying to look out for him, he drops his bag and runs to Kris. He hugs his boyfriend so tight that he thought he might have crushed the boy in his arms.

Kris kisses him softly for a moment until they start to giggle in each other’s mouths. Kris picks up his bag, holds Adam’s hand and leads him to the awaiting car in the airport parking lot. Kris and Adam keep glancing at each other during their drive to the apartment and Kris leans in to kiss him whenever they stop at a red light. They keep their hands locked the whole ride and Kris begins to tell Adam about the city, while the black haired man looks out the window with wide eyes.

When they stop in front of a 3 story building, Kris gets out and opens Adam’s door. He leads him to the door on the 2nd floor of the building. The apartment is nice, no, great... like eye candy, literally. The interior is just fabulous but a bit strange for Adam because he knows exactly how Kris’ room at the mansion looks. There are paintings that hang on the wall with variations from adorable cats to some strange but cute flowers to the lavender colored wall paint. Not to mention the peach colored curtains, the rainbow collection of throw pillows, and what smells something like orange and kiwi even though Kris doesn’t even like oranges. He feels that the apartment has an overly effeminate vibe that is so… not Kris.

He roams his eyes around the apartment and turns to look at Kris with an arched eyebrow. Adam sees Kris look a bit flustered,

“This is not my apartment. It’s Stacy’s. She’s my best friend’s girlfriend. Matt’s girlfriend. I kind of think that it’s safer to be here than in my place, my apartment, near the O’Connell’s house.” He explains. They are still standing in the living room.

“O’Connell’s?”

“My parent’s family friend. The one we always spend the holidays with?”

“Oh”

“Yeah”

“So, where’s your best friend’s girlfriend now?”

“I offered my place to her and Matt. Matt has his own place, but he shares with a roommate.”

“Okay, because I started to freak out when I thought it was really yours.”

“Yeah, I thought so too. I kind of read that on your face.” He chuckles, then slowly walks to Adam and starts to kiss him.

The kiss deepens and hands start to roam everywhere, until every piece of their clothing is splayed down on the floor, trailing from the living room to the bedroom.

The next morning, Kris takes him out for breakfast and then out shopping after to buy Adam a shawl, a pair of gloves, a beanie and even a thicker jacket. Even though it’s cold in Conway, Adam never got himself any of these things because he was able to tolerate the weather so far with his jacket and boots.

Kris takes him to see different interesting places and, after dinner, they head back to Stacy’s place. For two days they only went out to eat and spent the rest of the time snuggling and cuddling with each other.

On Adam’s 4th day in NY, he wakes up from his afternoon nap, alone. He picks up his clothes scattered on the floor from their love making before the nap. When he opens the door of the bedroom, he hears Kris’ voice. He is talking on the phone. Adam is about to close the door again to give him privacy, when he hears him saying something that ignites his curiosity that he was trying to lock away.

“What did you say then when she asked about me?” pause “She did?-uh, okay.” pause “You sure it didn’t just slip out, dude?” pause “I don’t know-I’m really, uh God, why is this happening to me, man. I just want to be happy, and yeah-exactly, with Adam. I love him so much and I want to spend the rest of my life with him.” pause “Thank you, Matt. Yeah-will do. See you soon man and say hi to Stacy for us.” last pause “ Yeah-I’ll tell him. Bye.”

Adam closes the door quickly but quietly. He couldn’t understand the one-sided conversation that he had just heard, but his mind is back to the moment when he heard the sweet girl’s voice on Kris’ phone after Thanksgiving. He doesn’t understand it, but he feels like something is off here.

Kris came inside the room and found him awake. He walked up to him and gave him a kiss. Then whispers ‘I want to cuddle more with you, babe’.

When Adam seems to freeze in place and didn’t follow him to bed, Kris raises his eyebrows questioningly. Adam just snaps and moves forward towards where Kris is on the bed to lie down with him. He tries to push his doubts and fears to the back of his mind and focus on their remaining time together in this cold winter city.

This is the best vacation he had ever been on in his life; not that he had been on many before. None at all, actually.

On their last night together, they go on a dinner date at a romantic restaurant. Earlier that day, they spent the whole afternoon together in central park. They had held hands from the time they got to the park to the time they walked home after dinner. They didn’t want to be separated and they never mentioned the airport or the flight the next day. There were unspoken rules about not ruining the night with their words.

~*~

Adam is finally back from NY and in Conway and it has been 2 weeks since he had arrived. He will be heading for his dorm tomorrow. Adam still feels Kris’ touch; his hand on his, his whispers, his promises. He is really going crazy, and he doesn’t know when they will see each other again. Hopefully soon.

~*~

Three months had passed, and Kim announced to the household that she would be hosting a grand party in the coming week for her and Neil’s 35th wedding anniversary. Adam became excited because, that meant Kris would be attending too. He doubts that Kris knows it just yet because he didn’t mention it to him before. So when Kris had called him an hour later, he enthusiastically squeals into Kris’ ear the happy news. Kris sounded liked he was excited too, but there was something that was quiet off about their conversation. Adam didn’t dwell on it much, because, yeah, Kris is coming home to him!

The preparation is quite insane. It’s like the couple would be getting married again. People go crazy with the planning and everything. He also heard a commotion among the housekeepers, because a certain O’Connell’s family would be attending. The family name was familiar like he had heard that before but Adam couldn’t quite figure out. He is just weirded out by how big of a deal that this family turned out to be for the Allen’s.

2 days before the party and everything is almost done, Kris and the O’Connell’s arrive. Adam and Sandra are in the living room when Kris, his parents and he assumes to be the O’Connell’s enter the room. Kris glances up at him while the set of parents chatted away. Adam notices a girl. A blond, slim, pretty girl who sits beside Kris. She looks at him when she notices that Kris is staring at him. He assumes, again, that she is the O’Connell’s daughter, Katy.

Adam was going to pee his pants because of holding back to run and kiss Kris in front of everyone right there. Kris looked like he was going to combust any seconds now from the moment he saw Adam and couldn’t even had a chance to talk to him. Adam is put to the task of polishing every object he could find around the living room with Sandra popping in here and there to check on his work.

Kris is aching, watching his boyfriend all tired and sweaty from doing all the chores. If he could just have his way, he would hold his hand and take him out of here and just be with him.

But his parents are asking him questions right now about the trip and his studies as well, just to have him there and to sit with Katy because his parents know that he is really close to bolting out of the house and driving around Conway.

Adam is sort of irritated with Katy’s fake smile (okay, he doesn’t know why he thinks that she has a fake smile, but he kind of does), and her voice is too sweet even for a face like that. She is looking at his Kris like she wants to sit on his lap and feed him grapes and cherries. Adam cringes at that thought.

Sandra even tapped on his elbow once to mouth ‘are you okay?’ to him, so he became aware that his expression looks like something in need of questioning. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have asked him that.

After all the things in that room are shiny, shimmery and sparkly, Adam and Sandra leave the room. He is very exhausted and finally retires to his room. As he is about to sleep, his phone vibrates.

He opens it and his face breaks into a sleepy smile with Kris’ message.

I love you, babe. Wish I could hold you and kiss you right now. Maybe later, though.

He slept with his phone clutched to his chest, but when he wakes up the next morning, he suddenly feels a bit hurt. He was expecting Kris to sneak in to his room to snuggle with him, but he didn’t.

When he goes out in search for Kris, he finds him and the same people from yesterday having breakfast on the patio. Kris looks up at Adam when he notices his raven haired boy, and looks kind of apologetic. He totally misses Katy’s eyes on him that look completely not amused.

After breakfast, all of them went inside the living room, probably to continue the never ending chat, leaving Adam and his mother taking care of the aftermath. He brings some plates and glasses on a tray when Kris emerges from nowhere. The smaller boy checks his surroundings to make sure no one is around to see them. When nobody’s in sight, he pulls Adam’s hand and leads him to the maids’ quarter’s hall that leads to Adam’s room.

As soon as the door is closed, Kris lunges at Adam and plants his face to his boy’s chest, breathing him in and just hugs him tight.

“God, I missed you so much. I wanted to do this since yesterday.”

“Then why didn’t you?” he asks, hugging Kris tightly as well.

“I couldn’t. Mom seemed to be everywhere yesterday until late last night. I’m sorry babe.”

“Your mom or that hot blond chick?” Kris looks up at him worried but in seconds his worriedness turns to mischief.

“My baby is jealous?” Kris teases him.

“I’m so not”

“You so are”

Then Kris suddenly captures his lips and kisses him slow and very passionate like he puts every emotion that he has for Adam into that single kiss. They pull apart, catching their breath, and Kris kisses him once more.

“I’ll come tonight. Tell Neil to sleep with Aaron.” He kisses him quick and goes out of the room, unnoticed.

Adam went out again to continue his chores and when Sandra asks him to go to Denny and tell him to pick up some supplies at the department store, he sees Kris and Katy hop in Kris’ car. He feels a pang of jealousy, but just shrugs it off like before. He doesn’t like Katy, yes. He’s jealous with her blatant flirting, sure. But he trusts Kris. And he knows Kris wouldn’t do anything to hurt him.

Kim asks him to do so much and sometimes it makes him think that she wants him to be drop dead tired so that he can’t stand the next day. And he has this weird feeling too that somebody is staring at him. But when he left his eyes roam to catch the spy, he sees nobody.

As promised, Kris came up to him that night. It was 2am, but when Kris started to undressed him, sleep washed off him. Kris makes love to him like it’s their last. So passionate and Adam can feel Kris’ love for him in his every touch, every thrust, and every whispers of his name to his ear.

They stay awake holding each other until it is time for Kris to sneak back into his room, after only a few hours of sneaking in. After Kris had left, Adam tries to catch some Z’s because he has a big day ahead of him.

In the morning, when Adam was helping the others setting the table and chairs neatly around the pool, Katy O’Connell finally comes up to him. He hadn’t seen Kris since he wandered around the mansion. He was about to text Kris when Katy came up to him with perfect raised eyebrows, looking at his cell phone then to his face.

“So, you’re Adam?” she asks as she walks near him and crosses her arms. He doesn’t like the tone in her voice.

“Yeah, I am.” He simply replies, slowly pocketing his phone.

“We’ve talked once, remember, when you called Kris’ phone after Thanksgiving?”

“Yeah, I remember.” Why couldn’t she just walk away and spend the day in front of the mirror making sure she would look like a princess when the party starts?

Adam continues to put the chair covers and table cloth in their assigned place, busying himself, hoping Katy would take the clue that he is not interested in talking to her.

“You seem close with Kris. Are you two best friends?”

“Y-yeah. We are best friends.” He said, matter of factly.

“Yeah, obviously. A friend that you could ask to give you anything that you wanted. For instance, that phone in your pocket. That’s from Kris right?”

Oh No! No! No way would this blond girl accuse him of using Kris. “I never asked him for anything, if that’s what you mean. He gave me this as a gift.”

“You could have said no, but you didn’t.” Adam was seriously pissed because this girl has some serious mental issues.

“Excuse me, Katy is it?” he continues when she nods. “I think it’s none of your business. It is mine and Kris’ alone.”

“What do you want from Kris, exactly, Adam?”

“I don’t think I need to explain myself to you. If you’ll excuse me, I have many things to do.” Then he left, and doesn’t look back. Where the hell is Kris anyway?

Adam didn’t see Kris the whole day, but he had texted him telling Adam he was with his father and Katy’s father at the tailor’s store who made their tuxes. Apparently, they need some last minute changes and it took forever to finish.

When the party started, Kim asked Adam to stay behind the food table with some other food servers from the caterer. When Kris finally emerged, Adam’s heart just fell to his stomach. Kris was so gorgeous with his suit and hair all styled up. He left some buttons undone from his shirt, letting his perfect chest peak out.

He suddenly felt like somebody had punched him in his stomach when he noticed Katy was linked onto his arm and was escorted by him to meet the guests. Adam felt so jealous, but he somewhat understood because Katy is the Allen’s guest of honor and Kris needed to be her date that night. Date? Huh, it suddenly felt so hot and he began to sweat.

Kris came up to the table and mouthed ‘sorry, I just had to’. Adam just nodded and gave Kris an ‘I totally understand’ look. Kris went to his parent’s table again with the O’Connell’s.

Adam had been hit on by a couple of men that evening; flirting and asking him to dance. He politely declined because he was working; so he said. Kris kept glancing at him because Adam knew that Kris was jealous. Adam began to enjoy the fact that he made Kris jealous when Kris was the one with a pretty girl beside him.

Lisa came and relieved Adam from his post. He was so happy to sit and eat in the kitchen alone. He was starving. He serves himself a plate of spaghetti and is about to sit and eat when Kris comes in.

“Hey, I was just looking for you,” Kris said, going to the drawer to pull a fork out and sit on the opposite of Adam. “Mmm, this is so good babe. I can’t eat outside, not with those folks talking about money and business around me.”

Adam nudges the plate near Kris and they silently share the food.

“I just want to run away with you right now and just make out in the car, like old times, you know. I missed you so much, babe.”

“I missed you too, Kris, but I don’t think I can run right now, my legs are killing me.”

“My poor baby. Need a massage later?” he winks at him, sending a shiver down Adam’s spine.

“You could sneak in tonight?”

“Of course. Nothing compares to sleeping beside you, you know.” He looks at Adam intensely. “I love you so much, babe.”

“I lo-”

“Kris! What are you doing in here?” Kim suddenly came in, sending the two to their feet and Adam drops him utensil with a clatter because Kim is in rage and Adam is terrified.

“Mom, um, I just need some air. I-I’m heading back out in a second.”

“That’s so ungentlemanly of you Kristopher, leaving Katy there all alone!” then she looks at Adam, “ and you Adam. Who told you that you were allowed to come in here and eat? Go and serve my guests.”

“Mom, Adam is tired. Could you just let him sit here for a while?”

“No! Now go out and dance with Katy. I have a few important announcements to make.” She glares at Adam before taking Kris wrist and pulling him to the party again.

Adam went out after Kim and Kris, still shocked at Kim’s behavior these past few days. She is always nit picking about everything Adam does.

He stands in the same place he had been at for the past 5 hours and tries not to think about his pain filled legs. He watches as Kris and Katy hit the dance floor and softly swaying to the music. Kris’ eyes were on him for most of the time he was dancing with Katy, and Adam feels Kris’ want because he too wants to be the one standing there dancing with him.

Somehow, the thought of Kris’ look that he had been giving him gets him through the painful standing. Gab had approached him a while back and talked to him, even tried to sit him down. But he politely declined, in fear of Kim’s glare. Everyone was acting so strange tonight. Actually the strangeness had started a couple of days before.

The song that had been playing was abruptly cut off and everyone halts. Kris and Katy stand side by side as do all of the guests, and they look at Kim who is walking to the small stage where the band and singer had performed.

“Good evening ladies and gentlemen. On behalf of my dear husband, Neil, my sons Gabriel and Kristopher, we would like to say that we are very grateful to have each and every one of you for coming to celebrate our 35 years of marriage with us.” She brings her glass of wine in the air, “To our next 35 year together!”

Everyone raises their glasses with her and drinks after the toast.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the O’Connell’s for coming all the way from New York just to celebrate with us. Thank you Tom, Sarah, and Katy. One more thing, uh, Kristopher, honey, can you come up here?” Kris makes a cute gesture of pointing at himself, asking his mother if she was really calling him up the stage. Adam smiles at his boyfriend’s reaction. He is so cute, really. When she nods, Katy pushes him forward and Adam feel a bit jealous. When he is up, he stands by his mother’s side, confused as to why his Mother needed him to come up.

“This party, ladies and gentlemen, is in fact a double celebration. It is for our 35th anniversary, as you all already know, and it is also a celebration for our son Kristopher.”

Kris knitted his brows like he doesn’t have an idea what’s his mother has been telling all these people. He looks at Adam, who looks confused too, eyebrows are up like he is asking ‘what is this, babe?’. In which the said babe doesn’t know what it is either.

“Come here, baby.” His mother reaches for his hand and brings him closer to her. “Kristopher has been engaged to Katherine O’Connell for two years now, and the young couple decided to tie the knot this June.” Everyone claps their hand and murmuring congratulations to them, in which Katy blissfully takes.

Kris feels like the earth had just eaten him alive. Well, that would be better than reality actually, because the look of pain on his boyfriend’s face, when he looks at him, is enough for him to throw himself in a fire. He looks at his mother shaking his head vigorously.

“No, you didn’t just do this, mother.” He whispers at her, his jaw is clench and his eyes are in blazing fire.

“Yes, I just did and you better not make a scene, or else…” she said while covering the microphone to hide their argument on stage.

“Or else what? You think I care about your money?” then Kris heart sinks when he thinks about Adam and when he looks in his direction again and Adam wasn’t there anymore. “Fuck”

Then he gets off the stage and runs through the silent crowd. He hears Katy is calling him, so he stops to face her.

“Are you happy now? Now that you get what you want?” he whispers, but the anger in his voice and on his face stamp each word his saying.

“Kris, just give it a chance. I’ll be a good wife and I would never hurt y-”

“And what do you do think you’re doing to me now? You’re making me happy, like dancing on my feet happy, because I’m marrying you? You know that it’s not you that I’m in love with, you know that, so back off.” He started to run again in search of his boyfriend.

“Where are you going? To Adam? To that filthy houseboy of yours?” When Kris didn’t even look back, she started to throw a fit. “Oh my God! Daddy!... I can’t believe this. Stop him from going to that.. Adam… Kris is mine! Daddy!” she shouted and stomped around the dance floor gaining a horrible look from the other guests.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the little misunderstanding. Please, continue to enjoy the food and music.” Then Kim Allen is storming off the stage determined on finding Kris.

She became more furious when she thought about where Kris might be at. “Adam” she said under her breath. She couldn’t let Adam ruin all this, all that she envisioned before Adam came to the mansion. She already had it planned, and a certain worthless houseboy couldn’t just blow it off. If Kris wouldn’t cave now, he would later on. She would just need to plan this all again, and now, she exactly know what to do.
