“You know, there are better things we can be doing on your birthday.”

Sam glanced over at Ruby and smirked. “I’ll still have a birthday next year. You need to pass this exam.” It was finals season, and they were inches away from graduation. Sam just had to get Ruby to pass physics, and it wasn’t coming as easily to her as it was to him. They had been sitting at a table outside the student center for the past three hours, trying to narrow down the basic principles in a way that actually made sense. There was a half-eaten serving of fries next to them, and he reached over to pop one in his mouth. “Focus.”

She smirked a bit, before leaning forward so that her mouth was inches from his. “This exam isn’t until Wednesday. We could celebrate today and still have time to study tomorrow.” She grinned. “Besides, I’m pretty sure we could make the conservation of energy a lot more interesting … ”

He grinned a bit, tipping his chin forward a bit as though he was going to kiss her, before whispering. “We’re celebrating with my mom later. You’ll have me all night. Physics first, then fun.”

She pouted at him. “You’re such a bore. Why am I dating you again?”

“Because I’m helping you pass physics.” He pulled back from her, turning the text book around to face him again. His fingers wandered over to one of the yellow cups sitting next to them, and Ruby groaned, her head flopping down into the table.

“Not the stupid Play-Doh again.”

“Hey.” He held up a finger with the ball of clay in his hand. “Don’t knock the Play-Doh. Play-Doh is a very helpful teaching aid.” She rolled her eyes, and he grinned before rolling the ball into more of a stick shape before breaking it in half. Then he pushed it down against the table and started rolling the pieces into two smaller balls. “Now-what’s the rule for the conservation of energy?”

“That energy cannot be created or destroyed.”

“Only?”

“Transferred. Do I get an A?”

“Maybe. How is energy transferred?”

“Through collisions. Two objects collide, they transfer energy into each other, and when they bounce back, their energy is altered.”

“Is that the only way energy can change?”

There was a pause as she thought about it for a moment, before a slow grin crossed her face. “Friction.”

He grinned back at her. “Not bad. I didn’t even have to break out the Play-Doh.”

Her grin widened as she reached forward to take the balls of clay from his hand. She mashed them back together before sticking the combined ball back into the yellow container. “You really don’t need it. I’m pretty sure that you had my full, undivided attention.”

He shifted forward, leaning closer to her again. “Well, it helps that you’re a very good student.”

“It helps that I had a hot teacher.”

At that, his grin turned sheepish, and he ducked his head a bit. “Guess it does.” When he looked up at her again, her bottom lip was caught between her teeth as she traced her fingers over his hand.

“So. Does this mean we get to finish with the studying, and get to the celebrating?”

He made a show of considering it for a moment, before nodding and leaning in to kiss her. “I think you’ve taxed your brain enough for one day,” he murmured softly against her lips, and she smiled, before pulling back and reaching for his hand.

“Good. Let’s go.”
