Sam knew that staying in one memory for too long was bound to get them caught. He also knew how much these memories of Mary meant to him, so he hadn’t wanted to push. Once it was over though, and Mary was off to get the pie, he and Dean tore through the room, looking for anything and everything that would give them a way out of where they were. They needed the next piece to the puzzle as much as Dean may have wanted to, they couldn’t stay here with Mary forever. They would be found and they couldn’t deal with that right now.

He paused in front of one of the windows, looking out through the reflection and staring at it for a moment. Having it suddenly go from night to day was something that you could definitely take notice of. It took him a second to place it, before shouting back over his shoulder at his brother. “Dean! I’ve seen this before.”

“Yeah?” Dean’s voice came from over his shoulder, and then after a beat. “Dude. That is not a side of you I want to see.” Sam turned around and glanced down at what he was wearing. He was in underwear and a t-shirt, and as he looked around his room, eyes widening as he realized what day this was. Dean, however, wouldn’t have any idea. “Is this the Hyperion?”

“Yeah,” Sam replied softly, before pushing his brother to the side, and there she was, wiggling out of her jeans as though Dean wasn’t there. As far as Jo was concerned, he wasn’t. Dean, however, at least had the decency to spin around.

“And that was a side of Jo I never wanted to see.” He paused, before responding. “Well, I did, but-”

“Dean. Shut up.” Sam’s fingers threaded through hers as he made his way closer to the bed, starting to slide under the covers next to her, moving so that he was wrapped around her, just like he had been that night. He started to slip himself back into the conversation again, until Dean spoke up again behind him.

“Uh, Sam-”

“You got your crust cut off, Dean,” Sam said softly, his fingers sliding through her hair. “This is mine.”

There was a long pause, before he spoke up again. “Yeah, but if I’m gonna wind up seein’ things-”

“Dean.”

Dean fell silent without provoking, and Jo had just stayed where she was, filling in her gaps of the conversation until his focus was back on her again. It all felt so real, and it was so easy to just get caught up in it all again. His mind didn’t wander to whether or not she knew what was happening. He didn’t think about what would happen if this was permanent, and he was stuck in Heaven, leaving her alone. He knew that he promised never to leave her and that wasn’t a promise he was going to be able to keep. That part killed him more than anything else.

The conversation tapered off to the important part, and part of him knew that he couldn’t stay through the end of it. He hadn’t gotten around to telling Dean when he should have and this was going to come as a bit of a shock but he needed to hear it again. He needed to be reminded why he put up with all this.

“You're one of the strongest people I know, Jo.”

“Right, I'm practically Wonder Woman here.” She curled into him, taking a deep breath as she looked up at him, the smile on her face one he was never going to forget. “Sam Winchester, what am I gonna do with you. I love you far too much than can be considered healthy for me.”

He hesitated. Only for a moment. With his brother watching and the second time around it was different, but the intention was still the same. “You could marry me.”

“What?”

Sam’s eyes closed and he didn’t want to look back at Dean. He should have said something. But it just happened before he could stop himself and he had to. Jo had put up with way too much from him for him to think otherwise. Especially if they managed to make it through this.

“Dude, seriously? You actually did it?”

Sam ignored him, just moving through the questions, her making sure he was sure, before he heard what he came there to hear in the first place.

“I'll marry you, Sam. Especially if it's in my health's best interest.”

He leaned into the kiss she gave him afterwards, still surprised at how real her lips against his felt, before he pulled himself away, knowing that they had to leave before Zachariah showed up, and he wasn’t going to let that son of a bitch ruin this memory. They started to search the room for their next move out of there, and Dean eased up next to him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Was trying to figure out how,” he replied quickly, not wanting to talk about it here. “Can we talk about this later?”

Dean was quiet for a moment before he responded. “Yeah, okay. Later.”

When they found the postcard, he glanced back at her one last time, curled up in bed where he should be with her. By the time he looked away again the world had changed and they were on to the next memory. He just hoped that the last one would be one that he would be able to salvage when this was over.
