Prompt

“So what do you think?”

Elle was sitting on her knees next to him, looking over his shoulder at the box in his hand. He felt the black velvet shift beneath his fingers and he just glanced back at her, biting his lip slightly as she appraised it and wondering if she was the right person to ask about this. It wasn’t that he didn’t adore Elle and trust her opinion, he just felt like she had about as much experience with this kind of thing as he did. He had tossed around the idea when he was dating Jess, looking at rings and trying to figure out what he should get. Jess had been a little easier-she actually wore a fair amount of jewelry on a regular basis, and it was pretty easy to tell what she liked.

Jo? Not so much.

Elle was the best option he had. He trusted her not to mock him like his brother would, and after her, the only other option was Faith. He wasn’t sure if Faith would mock him, spill the beans too soon, or just not know the answer, but this wasn’t really a question he thought she’d be able to answer either. He didn’t think that Faith was the girly, jewelry discussing type. He would have gone to Elle, regardless, however. She knew Jo, and more importantly she knew him, and would know whether or not this was the right move to make.

“I like it,” she said with a grin, resting a hand on his shoulder as she sat back a little. “You really gonna do it? Or are you gonna chicken out?”

Sam flashed her a bit of a look at that one. “Why would I chicken out?”

“Dean says you’ll totally wuss out at the last minute.”

He rolled his eyes. “Dean says a lot of things about me that aren’t really true.”

“I dunno. He might be right about this one,” she shrugged. “This is kind of a big deal. Sure she’s gonna say yes?”

“Nope,” Sam said with a sigh. “I’m hoping though. I figured she’s stuck with me this long, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t.”

“Asked Ellen what she thinks?”

Sam’s eyes widened slightly. “Are you kidding? She’d shoot me.”

“Why would she do that?” Elle gave him a bit of a confused look as she shifted so that she was sitting next to him more. “I mean, you guys did manage to stop Lucifer. You’d think that would earn you some brownie points.”

Sam nodded slowly before. “Ellen’s still kind of mad at me for letting him out in the first place-then putting Jo right in the middle of it.” Talking about that had gotten easier since they managed to take care of it. He still didn’t like to, but a brief reference didn’t hurt every once in a while.

“Oh. One of those protective parent things.”

“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “We’re not telling her about this until after Jo says yes.”

“Gotcha.”

“So you really think she’ll like it?”

Elle just grinned at him again, before wrapping her arms around his neck in a hug and nodding. “I think she’s gonna love it.”

“Good,” he nodded, sliding an arm around her waist as he squeezed her back. “Thanks for the help.”

“Anytime,” she said with a nod.
