I've been in Melbourne for nearly a week now, and so far it has been kinda crappy. This is the result of many factors:

1.Melbourne is ridiculously expensive. This makes fun-having difficult.

2.There isn't much sightseeing to be done here, which frustrates me. I need to see wild and magical things to make tour feel worthwhile.

3.The show just got a lot harder. The cast was cut by four people so we all have quite a bit more dancing to do. And the stage here is cementish, so it takes all the energy and health out of the old legs. This, in combination with jet lag, has left most of us with little energy to do much other than eat and lie around.

4. I've been involved in an unusually high number of confrontations and situations in which I've been let down lately. I'm feeling a bit disillusioned with people in general.

Here's why I'm still slightly optimistic about this place:

1. I'm slowly getting more fit for the show.

2. Melbourne is hip hip hip. Some of the kids in the show actually asked someone who lives here if there was a TGI Friday's around. The guy looked confused and said that Melbourne doesn't really do chains. Ten points for team independent! This place is loaded with cute little indie cafes and vintage/thrift stores, coffee shops and bars. This is a nice change from...pretty much everywhere else we've toured apart from London.

3. My friend Pat who lived here for a year sent me an amazing list of things to do and places to go here, so I should be able to find an affordable way to have a good time.

4. Today we all went to a neighborhood near the beach called St. Kilda. I found myself reminded a lot of California with all the palm trees and obviously the beach itself and the relaxed feel and punk kids all over the place. The beach was impeccable, and we did some wading and messing around in the water. We had ice cream and sat around on the beach. Drank wine at a wine bar looking out over the water that played punk the whole time. Sean the Canadian and I welcomed the others to the world of non-pop music. It was funny to see their reactions to the punk kids too. They seemed enthralled. Ireland really is an entirely different world. I mean, my current roommate, Michelle, said she'd never had pizza before coming on tour because "mummy daddy don't really eat exotic foods." These people are nuts. However, I appreciate that they're teaching me to be more generous. They love to share. They love it. They make me feel bad because I don't think to give away my stuff all the time. I guess the capitalism is at least a little engrained in Americans. Whoa digression.

5. We are staying in the most incredible apartments in the city center, all surrounded by skyscrapers. We have a nice kitchen and living room and I have my own room with a big bed. I feel like a successful businesswoman or something. Can't complain there.
