So, next season, the LA Opera is premiering a production of Gianni Schicchi directed by Woody Allen. I'm not sure how exactly that will work since Mr. Allen tend to work exclusively in original pieces - that's sort of what makes them so distinctly Woody Allen. Still. Awesome!
Then I noticed that they were also premiering an opera by Howard Shore! Awesome! Howard Shore! Writing opera! The opera is called The Fly. I wondered what that would be about... I thought of the movie first, but that seemed silly since it's about a man who gets his DNA crossed with a fly's and slowly turns into a giant man-fly monster (talk about difficult staging). I typed "Howard Shore the fly" in Google and the first result was the 1986 movie that he apparently scored... This movie was directed by David Cronenberg, which was funny because I swear I'd just seen his name somewhere... Somewhere like... the LA Opera 08-09 press release... So... opera bearing the same name, composer, and director as the 1986 film starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis about a man who splices his DNA with a fly's.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?! SERIOUSLY?! An opera of The Fly?! SERIOUSLY?! It's taking all of my willpower not to go buy a copy of the movie right now just to see how mind-blowingly unlikely this thing truly is. As Paul said, "Our ideas seem much more plausible now." I'm dying to see it. Dying. Oh em gee. How is this going to work? HOW?! Incroyable!
The Fly? Seriously?
