His needs were few, his room was bare...

Bwahahahaaa! Thank god for Google Alerts! This morning they directed my attention to this lovely little collection of clips and "behind the scenes footage."

13 Stills
9 Scene clips
3 Featurettes
2 Bits of shooting footage
And a partridge in a pear tree.

I tried watching one of the Dark Knight things, but it was all about shooting in IMAX. Yeah, yeah, that's great, go new technologies. I want to see more of the Joker! (Or any of the Joker...)

Anyway. There's a lot more singing in the clips! It is what one would expect. Johnny slides up to his notes (like a little grace note before the real one) a little too often for my taste, but hey. When he's singing the angry stuff he's perfect. The music has that same issue I had with Phantom where it just sounds recorded. I'm not sure why the recording in these films is bothering me but films like Chicago don't. I need to watch Chicago again (and Phantom too, I guess) to check on that. I'm starting to think it's the balance between the orchestra and the voices. They obviously have to jack the vocal tracks way up to compete with the orchestra because none of these people can sing over an orchestra, but it clearly sounds like singing that couldn't normally be heard over an orchestra. It is a mystery that will haunt me. I shall have to do more research when Hansel's over.

I'm courting the musicology thing again... Study of operatic production and performance over the ages, anybody? Study of the relationship between theater and music in opera and how it affects production and performance? I can get the degree I need if I want to teach, it prepares me for actual production work, gives me access to all the academic offerings a school of music has to offer, and gives me job flexibility in general. Hrmhrmhrm. Catholic U is still attractive and takes students on a rolling basis so if I get things in by the top of February I'll be perfectly safe... Hm hm. I need to talk to someone at the school of music.
