He couldn't even remember how many years have passed, exactly. Ten? Fifteen? Duncan always knew that his world would be different when Connor was dead, but he'd never expected the entire world to be the same way.
Crouching on top of the building, he looked down at the city in ruins. Fire was everywhere, people were looting and fighting one another, and yet Duncan didn't move. He hadn't shaved in days, and his clothes were no longer the neat, tailored kind he was known for. Sometimes, he missed his black trench coat, but not very often. Not tonight. Tonight, he was wearing a long coat trimmed with fur over a light colored shirt as he watched.
He watched as the city's structures fell apart, as the buildings became nothing more than support beams on fire... he watched as two men fought clumsily, no finesse to their movements at all... he watched as an ambulance made its way down the almost empty street, smoke spiraling upwards towards him.
Shivering from the cold, Duncan wrapped his coat around himself. Maybe it wasn't like this in the States or Paris, his usual places that he'd travel to, but somehow he doubted it. Word had it that it was like this worldwide.
He watched as a group of military arrived finally, and one man ran off. Standing to get a better view of the situation, he saw the men file out of the vehicle and pull ski masks over their faces, and he jumped. Something about it all had made him decide to move finally, but not to get involved. Good thing, too, since right after he'd jumped, another skyscraper exploded, debris and fire raining down all around.
He ran.
Through the empty street, searching for... what, exactly? Duncan's pace slowed down and he watched the fire around him, wondering why it felt like the passing of Connor had somehow led to this post-apocalyptic world. He stopped, finally, spinning around as he looked and... was that the presence of another Immortal? Did it matter anymore? Did he care?
The man before him drew his sword, and suddenly, Duncan's own katana was in his hand, familiar and yet not.
He stopped watching.
