Icon Tutorial #6

I won Mod's Invitation over at severalplums again and did a tutorial for the icon.

We're going

This tutorial features a gradient map and textures. The icon was made with Photoshop CS3 in 5 steps.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, layers are 100% Normal.

First of all, making this icon was a chore. Mostly because I had no idea how to crop or what to do with the colouring as the image provided for the challenge was beyond perfect. Considering the result, I eventually managed to come up with something.

Step 1:
After having found a crop I liked, I added a Black/White gradient map and set it to 60% Soft Light. This has the effect that the black darkens the depths and the white brightens the light areas, giving the icon more contrast. (If the gradient is reversed [from the get go or through the options] the effect is the opposite)

Step 2:
I wanted to add a something to the hand holding the glass/the lower part of the glass. Trying to create it myself with the brush didn't have the desired results, so I picked this texture
by forevernevermor and set it to Screen at 50%.
I rotated it until it was at the right spot, surrounding the lower part of the glass. I didn't like the way it looked though, so I blurred it using the Gaussian blur with the same settings as the last step.

Step 3:
Now I wanted the glass to be redder. So I used an empty layer and painted with a default brush over it. For that I used the colour #f86969 before blurring it using the Gaussian blur. I left the setting at 9. I set the layer to Soft Light.
Since I wasn't happy with the redness, I copied the layer. As it was too red now, I reduced the opacity to 40% for the copied layer.

Step 4:
Recently, I've found a love for the halftone textures by tearjerkericons. In this case I used this one
set to Screen.

However, it doesn't look nice covering her face. So I created a mask and painted over the area with her face before blurring. I'm assuming that I didn't change the settings for the gaussian blur (however, I seem to have accidentally deleted that part of my layer information that I had added).
Anyway, I didn't like the way the glass looked like now, so I used a grey tone (#595959) and painted over the glass with it (still on the mask) before going over it with the blur tool.

Step 5:
I thought that something was missing, so I checked the light textures I have and decided to use
by ProverbialSunrise @ deviantart set to Screen.
I rotated it and pulled it down a bit to keep it from covering her face. I didn't want it to be too dominating without being disappearing so I set it to 70%.

And now I was done.
