If we were zombies,
I would let you have the first bite
and the last one, too.
I would wipe blood from the corner of your mouth
and tell you when there was flesh between your teeth.
I would match my steps to yours
even if it meant letting the humans escape.
If we were angels,
I would let you sit in the v of my legs
as I smoothed the kinks out of your feathers.
I would straighten your halo when it was crooked
and stroke your wings when you spread them.
I would listen to you sing
till Judgment Day and beyond.
If we were robots,
I would listen for the creaks of your hinges
and oil them before you could protest.
I would shield you from water,
So you didn’t rust.
I would hug your metal chest against mine,
and listen to the gears turn inside you.
