BLEACH
Oh my god, you guys, I know that no one cares, but I love Bleach so much. ;____;
I never really saw the appeal of anime and manga, which made me the most un-Asian Asian of my group of friends, but I watched Bleach on Adult Swim one night and got hooked. The characters are very idealistic, but I don't mind, because I'm pretty idealistic myself.
Basically, it's about a 15-year-old boy (who looks a lot older, but whatever) named Ichigo, who becomes a soul reaper one night in order to protect his family from hollows, which are spirits that have basically gone bad. The soul reaper powers are given to him by Rukia, a soul reaper. She isn't actually allowed to do that, so she gets arrested and is forced to go back to the Soul Society, where all the soul reapers and spirits live. Ichigo and a bunch of his friends, who have special powers for some reason, go and save her. AND IT IS EPIC. Ichigo really shouldn't be able to defeat all the soul reapers he does, given his experience, but whatever, it's badass. Oh, and here's the interesting thing about Ichigo. He's kind of half hollow. Whenever he isn't able to fight anymore, the Hollow inside him takes over. And he's got a spine chilling grin and laugh. I love it.
Why do I love Bleach so much? First, the characters. Ichigo is so stubborn and can be thick-headed, but he seriously has a heart of gold. He puts so much weight on his promises and he wants to save everyone. He's usually either very apathetic or very angry, but when he smiles, I swoon. Most of the characters have fantastic back stories. I love Rukia's brother, Byakuya, even though he's cold and unaffectionate, because he loves Rukia so much, even if he shows it in subtle and sly ways. I love Toushirou, because he's basically a boy genius, and everyone is always making fun of him for being so small and short, even though he's a captain, the highest ranking officer in the Soul Society. Man, I love them all. They are all so smooth.
Also, the powers? Fucking awesome. Kira can make your weapon twice as heavy just by striking it with his own sword. Byakuya's sword can break up into a million small blades. Toshirou's sword can turn into an ice dragon. Come on, how awesome is that?
The Soul Society has some serious flaws, though. They have social classes, which sucks, because I figured the after life would be free of those. It can be so corrupted and stupid sometimes that I throw my hands up in the air and just want the villains to take over the goddamn world already. Also, I wish Ichigo's sword did coolers things. :P
