THIS IS NOT A LIST-THE-NEGATIVITY EXERCISE AND THERE ARE A NUMBER OF COUNTER-EXAMPLES BUT THEY ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. I FIGURED A FAIR NUMBER OF PEOPLE READ MY JOURNAL AND IT MIGHT BE A GOOD PLACE TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT HOW MUCH HATE THERE IS OUT THERE. how easy is it to cry out loud that simplicity is bliss, and simply sweep 'em all under the carpet of our aweful mind?

but how easy is it though, to stare at reality in the face and yell fuck you?

I honestly don't know.

If visibility ie. being "out" is political, then I guess the GLBT community in Asia has a long, long way to go.

i am under the impression (misled, perhaps and misunderstood, possibly but an impression nonetheless) of an asian LGBT society much more keen in visibility being social, and overdosed with hipster "in"ness.

The skeptic in me believes that this visbility ie. glittery rainbow accessories and tight New Urban Male tank tops only exists because it is commercial. Money talks and walks. We may adopt so-called liberal systems like representative democracy and open our doors to foreign investors because it brings in the $$$ (pink dollar hypocrisy, anyone?) but look at the discriminatory laws that are still in place "to reflect the mindsets of the conservative and traditional majority". The last time I checked, one can be legally fired from his/her job for being "choosing the hedonistic gay lifestyle".

A significant number of our Western counterparts believe that if one is queer, s/he should be visibly so in order to raise awareness within his/her community and find solidarity in likeminded butch/femme/insert-label-here queers.

I sure hope I am not accused of making any seditious remarks here.

*violent shudder*

I personally do not suscribe to the "visibility is political -- come out" belief because I'd rather not label myself like that (but I understand why other people do).
