Once V'd fallen asleep, Meredith sat and watched him for a very long time. He probably had the keys on him, but she didn't trust him to sleep through any sort of search. So she got up to search the room, instead. What she found, apart from all the proscribed art and convoluted architecture, was an incredible bathroom behind an inobtrusive door. She almost disregarded it and went on with her explorations, but then something caught her eye.

The enormous enamal clawfoot bath tub, its brass fixtures gleaming in the light. Deep enough she could soak her entire body.

She was acutely aware that it had been ten days since her perfunctory shower the morning of her kidnapping. Ten days of living in a tiny cell, of accumulated personal filth.

The water was pure nirvana, and there was lavender-scented soap. She found a book that looked marginally unobjectionable on his shelves and locked herself in with it and the hot water.
