Edo strips, all burning cheeks and soft, rustling cloth. And when she’s bared before him (bump of her belly swelling over that shameful place), Ryo gives a leer.

“So it’s true,” he says.

She feels the wetness of mortified tears prick her eyes, but she keeps her voice steady as she asks, “Sir?”

“Who did that to you?” he asks her, as if he didn’t well know. “Was it one of the gardeners?”

“No, sir.”

“One of the stable lads, then?”

“No, sir.”

“Not the undercook, surely,” he says, feigned disbelief wide in his eyes.
