Goodbye, Marry the Night.
Due to the fact that Lady Gaga's new single, "Marry the Night" did not reach the top ten, Interscope Records decided to pull it off of the radios. Now, I've got this theory about WHY, "Marry the Night" was Gaga's first official flop.
THE MARKETING WAS WRONG!
When Gaga first revealed that her 5th single was MTN, it was October! There was much hype needless to say - I mean, the song was brilliant! And so, a month or so goes by, and nothing with the song. We're waiting with the album artwork and the radio's are not playing it yet and no word of the video release. So...now what? It states that on November 21st, 2011, MTN was released onto the radio. That is a filthy lie in my opinion. Even if that was the intention, I'm pretty sure that I did not hear it until the middle of December. While you're probably thinking, "That's only two weeks!" that is a LOT of time in the business. Without that first two weeks of hype and constant airplay, Gaga's single missed the mark. After sported the amazing music video, which got a lot of attention...the first week. To date, the video only has about 25 million views (compare that to the likes of the other singles from the album which all have over 40 million views, half of them over 100 million views). Now, who is really to blame? I blame Gaga's record company, Interscope Records. Why, you ask? Well, with this tweet, I rest my case, "If monsters make #MARRYTHENIGHTSINGLECOVER a number one trending topic I will release it tonight. Early. SORRY INTERSCOPE! I LOVE THEM!" Now let's look at those last two statements. "SORRY INTERSCOPE! I LOVE THEM!" What I get from that is, Interscope probably wanted to wait even longer to release the cover art and possibly even the single. I swear, this marketing was terrible! BREAK DOWN TIME!
STEP 001: WAIT
I mean, God forbid you give the fans something to hype over other than a song that has been public for at least 5 months!
STEP 002: DO NOT PERMISSION TO RADIOS UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE
No hype is good - if no one other than her Monsters hear the song, than it was defiantly do well. Who needs air play? What's that you say? Every artist? Even Lady Gaga? You are correct!
STEP 003: ONCE ON THE RADIO, TAKE IT OFF IMMEDIATELY
Now with very limited air play, you've got a hit. Take it off the radios, the whole world has heard it in a few weeks!
UGH. So as I am excited for a new single from Lady Gaga, I'm pissed that my favorite single from BTW is now gone from our public radio, forever.
DEAR INTERSCOPE, FUCK YOU.
LOVE LIAM,
XOXO
PAWS UP FOREVER!
marry the night,
