The mirror was propped on a stack of boxes. It was just the right height for them to use when shaving, and just the right height to catch Fay’s eye as he passed.
The blond stopped, watched the reflected candlelight flicker in the glass. It was a long moment before he stepped closer.
The mirror was small and round, only good for looking at bits and pieces of things - nothing in it’s entirety. When he stood close, all he could see was his mouth, not smiling, not frowning. He reached out and picked it up, raised it higher. Dark eyes looked back at him, the same black as everyone else in this warring world.
It was only a small change, a surface change. He was still the same man, still a wizard of no magic, just as Kurogane was the same, a ninja of no surrender. The thought caused one side of Fay’s mouth to quirk, unsure if it was meant to be smiling or not. Fay himself couldn’t say.
It didn’t matter, anyway, because in a second, he was lost again, distracted by the black eyes in place of the usual blue. It was only here, in Yama, that Fay could look at his reflection and not see his brother.
It had been a shock at first, but now he was used to it.
Now, he studied his eyes and felt, instead of guilt, fear.
Fear that without his brother’s blue eyes, he might start to believe he deserved his own life.
Fear that when he looked into Kurogane’s own dark eyes, he might start to believe what he saw in them.
When Kurogane came back, he was irritated to find the mage sweeping up the broken pieces of their only mirror, too busy to look him in the eye.
