Table here!Summary/Excerpt: There was something different in the world.
There was something different in the world. The petals that usually covered the grass in an even carpet were a mess, piles of pink blossoms here and there, wide empty swathes all around the tree itself. Several branches seemed a little barer than normal. And when Byakuya looked up at Senbonzakura, he found a slightly flustered face looking back at him. Senbonzakura’s robes, though not obviously in disarray, seemed a little rumpled, a little off.
Byakuya wondered if he hadn’t been expected, but rejected the idea as impossible. He always visited at the same time each day, and the clock had clearly been displaying five p.m. when he’d walked into the garden.
Next, he wondered if it was his fault. This second thought was dismissed as quickly as the first. Being pleased had never resulted in what, to Senbonzakura, must surely be considered chaos.
Before he could ask, Senbonzakura asked a question first. “Would you care to know how I know your meeting yesterday went well?”
This, obviously, was supposed to be a clue. Of course Senbonzakura would have known immediately how his meeting with Zaraki had gone. There was no need to say it. So what else had happened? Byakuya was forced to shake his head in ignorance.
Senbonzakura gave the hem of a pale pink robe an irritated tug. “I know this because I had the pleasure of a visitor earlier this afternoon. Now that your courtship is official, I, too, am involved.”
Understanding washed over Byakuya. “I see. What is her Zanpakuto like?”
A pale hand smoothed loose strands of hair back into place. “The Zanpakuto of your lady is loud, curious, fast, ceaselessly in motion, has a self-concept that seems to include the characteristic ‘feline’, and is able to suppress reiatsu at will. This last skill is most irritating.”
That, thought Byakuya, explained a lot. He almost smiled when Senbonzakura slipped gracefully out of the tree, still trying to fix robes that simply would not fall back into place. He doubted Senbonzakura would ever be perfectly composed from this day on, and he felt an uncharacteristic rush of sympathy. He had been trying to smooth himself out emotionally for months now. Senbonzakura stepped very close to Byakuya, raised vivid green eyes to meet his own stormy ones.
“I have never, in all my time, known another like that.” A light touch ghosted over Byakuya’s cheek. “We must hold them.”
Byakuya understood completely. There was no need to say it.
