They had been home for a few months. There was a lot to do, but the princess did her best to do everything quickly, and with as little fuss as possible. Kurogane was given his place among the guards, though not the same one he held before. He was given a home on the lands of his father, and the title to go with it. Kurogane surprised himself by accepting. Fay was welcomed as a citizen, and was offered a position in the palace if he wanted it.
There were meetings, questions, ceremonies, explanations, and all sorts of other things to go through.
And they were all buzzing inside Kurogane’s head, occupying him day and night. Endless noise.
He was happy to be home. He had everything he had been missing, and more, besides. It was all he wanted. So when he heard Fay singing in the garden, he was confused by the sudden rush of feeling inside him, the burning ache in his eyes.
He stopped, just at the edge of the garden, and listened to Fay’s voice. Fay had discovered long ago that the easiest way for him to learn a language was through song, and so had sung almost non-stop since the week they had arrived in Nihon.
He wasn’t a bad singer, and if it meant him learning, Kurogane didn’t mind. It was actually rather nice hearing him pronounce (sometimes badly) Japanese.
At this moment, however, being as unpredictable as he was, Fay had somehow learned a love song Kurogane hadn’t heard in years. Hearing it from Fay made him realize he was home. He wasn’t going to leave again, wasn’t going to be dropped into an unfamiliar world. The only princess he had to protect was his own, and there was no kid to teach, no pork bun to scream at. He was happy to be home, but oh, so homesick for his little family.
Fay reached the end of his verse, and before he could start the next one, Kurogane did. He stepped into the garden and walked to Fay’s side, sat with him among the flowers. They finished the song in turns, and by the end, Kurogane’s head was on Fay’s shoulder, and Fay was leaning back against Kurogane’s chest. Fay turned his head and gave Kurogane’s temple a firm kiss, and Kurogane smiled into the blond’s shoulder.
“My parents used to sing that to each other.”
Fay’s hand caressed the side of Kurogane’s face. “We should continue the tradition.”
“Mmm.” Kurogane’s hold on Fay tightened ever so slightly. “We should also sing that song we learned in Piffle.”
“What? The silly one we made you sing with us? But you hated that song,” Fay said with a laugh.
“It’s the only one we all sang together.”
Fay stopped laughing. “Kuro-pon…are you alright? Aren’t you the one who consoled me when we parted ways?” His tone was gentle.
“I knew we were leaving them. But I’m only feeling it now.” The ache in his eyes had become liquid, and he blinked it away rapidly. “I knew we wouldn’t see them again, but never-”
“Kuro-chan, why did we go to all those worlds?”
“…what?”
“Why did we go to all those worlds?”
“To find the princess’ feathers.”
“To find Sakura-chan’s memories. Because they were powerful things, important things. And though we can’t see Sakura-chan, or Syaoran-kun, or Mokona, we have our memories. We’ll sing that ridiculous song, we’ll remember them, believe that they’re happy together, and it’ll be alright.”
Kurogane was silent for a moment, then:
“You idiot. That’s just a different way of saying what I told you when we left them.” He was smiling again.
Fay laughed. “I know, Kuro-mi. That’s how I know it’s true. Things have turned out alright. Now, I say it to you, and you’ll believe it. I’m sad, though, that you told me something you didn’t really believe when I was so upset…”
Kurogane growled and pulled Fay down onto the grass beneath them.
