It called out from the ruins, called with a power that would have driven him to his knees if he’d been any other man besides himself. That power was his. It was the physical manifestation of a piece of his soul, the piece the gods had stolen in order to control the rest of it. It tied him, bound him to the land for all eternity, causing his soul to be re-born again and again.

He ran, ran as fast as he could, passing through the ruined halls as easily as he had in a long ago life, when the ruins had been a shining temple, all smooth white marble instead of worn stone and swaying grass.

He ran hard, but stopped dead at the entrance to the glade. Though sunlight streamed down, filtered through the leaves of massive trees, it still held the sacred feel of the temple it once was. He stepped over the threshold, blue eyes fixed steadily on the pedestal that stood, untouched and unchanged, in the center.

He climbed the steps, paused before it for a moment, as he’d done countless times across the ages. Then he reached out, left hand closing around the hilt. His eyes closed.

For one eternal moment, the gods held their breath. He fought, his soul raging while his body stood perfectly still in the quiet grove. The world swayed. Only in this instant could he break free of them, take the sword and cut them down. One day, the danger would be realized and the Hero would be free. But not this time. For now, the bonds on his power were strong enough to hold him.

He opened his eyes and pulled the sword from its stand, held it up to the light. They were only brought together in times of blood and fire.

They were reunited. He slipped it into his sheath as he turned, moved back down the stone steps.

This scene had played out countless times through the centuries, always the same. And if ever it didn’t, it would be the end of all things. He was not called the Hero of Time because one of his incarnations had mastered it. It was because each of his incarnations could destroy it all as well as save it. All he needed to do either was in his hands.

The Master Sword.
