Title: Home Sick
Pairing: Kurogane/Fay (Characters by CLAMP)
Warnings: None
Notes: Another entry from my High School AU. Silliness. Makes a reference to 'Sucker'.
“Hello?” Fay’s blond head appeared in the kitchen doorway. Kurogane’s mother smiled.
“I was wondering when you’d turn up. You can go right ahead.” At this, Fay grinned and disappeared with a wave, leaving Kurogane’s mother and a friend of hers in the kitchen. As he went up the stairs, he heard them move towards the front door he’d burst through not long before.
“I didn’t realize it was so late. Shizuka will be home soon, too. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Alright, Himawari, tomorrow. And thanks again for…”
Fay never heard what she was thanked for. He moved quietly down the hallway, peered through Kurogane’s door. The dark-haired boy was in bed, sleeping. Fay crept in, stood by the bed, and studied Kurogane. He looked a little paler than usual, and Fay could see shadows under his eyes. The blond reached out and gently touched a hand to the other boy’s forehead. It was hot and sweaty. Kurogane moaned and opened his eyes slightly to see who’d touched him. “Fay…” his voice was hoarse.
Fay dropped his bag and knelt by the bed. Kurogane was hardly ever ill, and the sight of him like this pulled on Fay’s heartstrings. “Kuro-chan. How do you feel?”
Kurogane muttered something unintelligible as he brought the blankets up closer to his face. Fay looked around the room, saw an empty mug on the night-table.
“Would you like some tea? Or maybe a cool cloth for your head?” The blond looked back at Kurogane, who just shook his head wearily. Fay rested his chin on the bed, looked into tired red eyes. “What do you want?” Kurogane started to say something, but began to cough instead. By the time he was done, he was shaking and his eyes were watering. Fay got up and sat on the bed, put his arms around Kurogane gently. “Kuro-chan.” An arm escaped from beneath the blankets to hold Fay close. The blond sighed. “I can’t believe you’re actually sick. I brought you homework, but I’ll do it for you when I do mine tonight. I just…”
“What are you doing?” Fay looked up. Kurogane’s little sister stood in the doorway, smiling sweetly.
“Oh, Tomoyo-chan. Did you just get home? I was going to walk you home, but I couldn’t find you at school.”
“I didn’t go to school today.”
“Are you sick too?” Behind him, Fay felt Kurogane roll over, his back to the blond.
“No. I stayed home because our basement flooded last night, and we were all up so late mother let us sleep in.” Tomoyo’s eyes glanced from Fay to her older brother. “I didn’t know you were sick, Kurogane. It must have come over you very suddenly.” She smirked slightly and left the doorway. Fay sat very still for a moment, then turned slowly to look at Kurogane’s shaking back.
“Flooded basement?” Fay pulled the blankets away from the dark-haired boy, who’d been lying, fully dressed, beneath about four of them. “A fake fever?!” He yanked the pillow out from beneath Kurogane’s head and began to beat him with it.
Kurogane burst out laughing. Fay hit him harder. “I…” Whump! “…was…” Whump! “…worried!” Whump! He punctuated each word with a smack of the pillow to Kurogane’s head. Kurogane rolled over, snatched the pillow away and held off Fay with one out-stretched arm.
“You fell for it!” He grinned devilishly. “If it wasn’t for Tomoyo, I wouldn’t have to do any homework tonight, either.” He laughed as Fay scowled and reached for the pillow, trying to steal it back. Kurogane stopped holding Fay off and let the blond fall forward onto his chest, where he quickly pinned him down. “I’m glad you were so worried about me.”
“I was. That was really unfair. You’re never sick.”
“That was funny. And besides, it’s been a long time since you’ve sat worried at my bedside.”
“It’s been a long time since you’ve gotten into a fight and been hurt.” Fay was still frowning, but his eyes didn’t quite match his stern expression. “You liar.”
“I never actually said I was sick. You just assumed. And that wasn’t a coughing fit, I was just trying not to laugh. You were giving me such a look, like a wounded kitten.”
“Hmph. You’re a better actor than I thought, Kuro-chan.”
“I’ve watched you do it all these years.”
Fay gasped. “I’m always perfectly honest! I never act!” He tried to look indignant, but laughter was bubbling up inside him.
“You’re lying right now. Everyone thinks you’re a pure, kind-hearted, gentle soul, when really you’re a clever, manipulative soul who will use unfair tactics to get his way.”
“I’m sure I don’t know what you mean. I’ve never done anything manipulative in my entire life. If I cry, it’s because I’m sad. If I cower, it’s because I’m scared. And if I suck on a lollipop…” his blue eyes crinkled in mirth as Kurogane’s widened in surprise “…it’s because I want something sweet.”
“So it was on purpose.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Was there a time where sucking on a lollipop got me my way...?”
"A clever, manipulative, evil soul."
