[Yup. That is indeed a large bird fighting with a flaming monkey.
HOLY COW.
This is SO FREAKIN' COOL.
However, Picky is bad at verbalizing these things, and is currently standing there, jaw slack, watching this giant bird vs. fire monkey showdown with awe.]
[A big burning monkey and an equally large bird are pretty attention-grabbing. However, the voice calling out commands seems like a pretty good clue in the grand mystery of "what the hay is going on, here." He turns his head, spots the boy with the little yellow creature, and sidles quickly on over.
He's making sure to give the fighting animals a wide, wide, wiiiiiide berth.]
Oh. [...maybe if he gets a hat, people will stop thinking he looks like "some guy I know". That some guy wouldn't be happy to find out how much this is happening.]
I'm Finch, from Onett! You train... Pokémon? What're those?
[His attention snaps to Pikachu. That one's smaller... and not on fire.... he edges closer. It had said hi, right?]
[And he pulls a small device out of his pocket...]
Pokémon, short for Po--
Ah, we can probably skip ahead a bit... Uh... There.
... Pokémon and humans live in harmony, with humans raising Pokémon as pets, friends or for competing in trials of strength and ability such as Pokémon battles. Pokémon trainers are permitted by law to carry up to six Pokémon at a time. The exact number of Pokémon species is unknown, however there are over a hundred of catalogued species in the Unova region alone, with many hundreds more throughout the rest of the world...
[And the explanation will continue along like this...]
[It talks! That thing he had in his pocket TALKS! Picky listens to it all intently, occasionally looking back to the fire monkey or the yellow rodent-thing.]

[As the ape spews flames from its mouth at the bird, Picky may notice a boy and his oversized yellow mouse on the sidelines.]
Yeah, keep it up! Staraptor, dodge and use your Aerial Ace! Infernape, Dig!

[He's getting used to this! It's getting easier to play dumb about "hey why do you look like Pokey"! Even with fire-monkeys. And giant birds.]
Hi! Are those yours? What are they?! They're cool!
[He points at the pokemon.]

[I mean, Ash has had... what, at least three or four doppelgangers in canon? And that's only counting the first two seasons.]
Yeah, I'm Ash from Pallet. Pokémon Trainer. These guys are my Pokémon.
Pika, Pikachu!

...so they're pets! Sort of! But better? Yeah?
That's SO COOL!
[He totally wants a fire monkey as a pet, now.]

[...he does manage to get his enthusiasm somewhat under control, though. Picky takes a breath. And then another one.]
