[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Jaganashi Hiei
Age: 101
Gender: Male
Fandom: Yu Yu Hakusho
Timeline: After the Second Dark Tournament.
History:
click. There is also a
video if you'd rather hear it that way.
Character Personality:
In reality, Hiei is not too different from most demons in the world he comes from. His past is dark, but he doesn’t talk about it very often, if at all. The only people who really know of his history is the man who gave him his Jagan, and quite possibly Yusuke and Kurama. Otherwise he places no faith in people outside his small circle, and feels very comfortable that way. Most of his behavior, however, can be pinpointed down to the trauma of being tossed to his ‘death’ off of the Koorime Island for being born male. He was able to see, hear, and clearly understand what was being done to him even as an infant, and born incredibly powerful, hence how he survived the fall and remembers to this day what happened in almost pain staking detail. In a way he keeps a small circle of friends because he was often left abandoned as a child, first by the Koorime and then the bandits who raised him after finding him in a river. From the point forward he has remained either alone, or with Team Urameshi and select few others. Though many know of him, it’s a far stretch to say many people truly known Jaganashi Hiei. They may claim to, but in the long and short of things, they truthfully do not. He puts little effort into making and retaining partnerships or friendships, and expects the other party to simply accept things for what they are. Often he seems to belittle anyone who has strong emotions for others, often mocking and less than understanding when it comes to matters of the heart of matters of ‘feelings.’ Everything in life, to Hiei, is a survival tactic, and everyone would do better to remember that over silly matters of feelings or ‘the heart.’
Despite his abilities to mock and laugh at others, particularly humans and those he considers weaker than himself, Hiei is largely taciturn. When meeting new people he hardly bothers to speak unless it’s to insult them or tell them they’re wrong. The amount he speaks to individuals seems to be directly related to his respect level for them. As such, with the little respect he has for Kuwabara, most of his interaction with him seems to making fun of him or completely discounting his intelligence. The same goes for other strangers that he isn’t as familiar with. However with Kurama and Yusuke, he has been known and seen to carry out longer conversations on tactics and other things. Not that they are anything spectacular, as these conversations are usually still considered short by most people’s standards, but for Hiei any long period spent speaking is generally a sign of respect or general appreciation. The only person who he doesn’t seem to mock, and is indeed quite warm towards is his twin sister Yukina, though he refuses to tell her that he is the twin brother she has been looking for all of these years. But that can mostly be left up to sibling favoritism. If chalked up to his emotions he will most likely react aversely. However, it’s important to note that Hiei is unbiased when it comes to making friends, enemies, and allies. Gender, as well a demon or human race doesn’t seem to matter so long as the other person he is considering is useful at the moment. After that moment of usefulness, however, he isn’t really known to stick around. This bias also extends to enemies and those he intends to get rid of. Hiei has killed the most people of all those on Team Urameshi, and always makes good on his threats to kill someone if he makes it, showing the same level of ruthlessness so matter what.
He has a rather cynical and misanthropic view of the world and all that goes on in it, and has no problem sharing his feelings of these sorts of things, no matter if it’s warranted or not. He has been known to crush a lot of optimistic theories in his time, and doesn’t seem to be bothered by the negative reactions he’s gotten because of it. He tends to belittle the importance most people place on their own lives and friendships. He seems to regard everything as transient, and remains aloof so as not to grow attached to one person or group of people to the point of weakness. Hiei is completely focused on training for strength and being the strongest, so it shouldn’t be surprising that he places his training before anything and everyone. Well, not exactly everyone, because if someone were to mention Yukina was in peril, or Kurama was to call, he might be tempted to skip out of Makai in two slow thuds of his tiny shriveled little demon heart.
Finally reaching puberty at the age of 101, as is typical for Koorime, Hiei’s general demeanor hasn’t really changed. Other than periods of enhanced aggression he doesn’t seem to seek out the company of others at a heightened rate, nor does he stay away from people with particular vigor either. It seems that the hormonal change has only succeeded in making him a little more aloof in order to deny any new emotion that might be boiling up from his pituitary gland, or whatever demon equivalent there might be for that. He still prefers to work on his own little secret agendas, and prefers to remain notorious among everyone he meets for the sake of saving face. He still occasionally struggles with his identity as a loner, and still struggles daily with abandonment issues. He considers these little quirks to be massive weaknesses and personality flaws, though, and continually works towards changing them if he can hope to do so. However the only plausible cure for his loneliness and abandonment would be telling Yukina that he is her brother, which he swore to the man who gave him his Jagan he would never do. Ever a man to his word, he still has yet to do so, even though Shigure is dead these days.
Character Abilities:
Despite barely standing 4’11” tall (excluding his hair), Hiei is an extremely competent, extremely powerful fighter. His demon abilities from both the Koorime and fire demon parts of his genetics seem to have formed together in the most advantageous way they could have when it came to Hiei’s power level. At the age of five he was said to have risen to the rank of A-Class youki status, which is only one rank below the most powerful demons in S class, which is a rank he retains now. He is a ruthless killer and master swordsmen, as taught by Shigure after gaining his Jagan eye. Hiei is resistant to both extreme heat and extreme cold. His unique body chemistry makes him invulnerable to flames and ice of most types, the only fire to date able to burn him and destroy his flesh was the dragon of the darkness flame, which controlling in itself is a legendary feat. His unique body chemistry as the son of an ice apparition and a fire demon may be the cause of this unique ability. Though it has often been mistaken for the ability to teleport, Hiei is simply quite fast. He has previously sliced an enemy sixteen times in the blink of an eye, and moves so fast that he has been known to leave a tangible after image.
He also possesses a surgically implanted third eye in his forehead - better known as the Jagan or ‘Evil Eye.’ Because of this he has a wide range of phychic abilities, including telepathy, telekinesis, remote-viewing, and memory erasure. It also allows him to control lower class demons and of course, humans. Whenever Hiei uses any of his flame techniques the eye opens, allowing him to bridge his fire nature with his Koorime blood. The Jagan also allows him a special Jaganashi - or Evil Eye Practitioner - form, the power of his Jagan is greatly increased, enhancing his already-great speed, allowing him to paralyze his foes with a binding curse, bolstering his physical strength, and giving him the capacity to summon multiple dragons. Its weakness is that, if anything blinds the Jagan while Hiei is in this form, he will be unable to utilize its powers to the fullest extent. He hardly ever uses this form, though, presumably because of it’s obvious weaknesses.
His most powerful attacks are that of the Darkness Flame, however, fire he summons from the Demon world that he typically forms into the shape of a dragon. These flames, when used, completely consume all that they devour, meaning everything from stone to organic bodies of all types. Essentially, all targets are sent into oblivion. Only a few, very powerful foes have been able to repel the hellfire creature, which makes it a remarkably useful weapon of intimidation. However, after using this dragon technique, he must go into a state of hibernation for a while in order to recover his spirit and demon energies for the next battle. The darkness flame can also be bent into a sword, and into a smaller version, called the Deadly Flame of Hell.
He also has the ability to channel less powerful flames from the human world into one or both of his hands. This is called the ‘Purgatory Scorch’ or ‘Fist of the Mortal Flame.’ This not only enhances his hand-to-hand combat skills, but allows him to disintegrate objects with a touch. The power level of this attack greatly depends on whether Hiei attacks with it on one hand or both. The same flames can be used in a long range flame thrower attack, though he hardly ever uses this technique in preference of closer combat.
Character Weaknesses:
Hiei’s most obvious weakness, so far as physicality, is the third Jagan eye on his forehead. Though it holds considerable power, if it is blinded, the powers is bestows him will be significantly weakened, if not disappear altogether. The other drawback to his rather extremely powerful demonic powers is that, after utilizing the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, he must go into a state of hibernation in order to recover energy. If he does not do it voluntarily, he will most likely faint at some point shortly afterward, which would be an even greater inconvenience. Hiei’s major weaknesses lie in his utter disgust with emotions, and the fact he does not value life, and it seems, not even his own. He is willing to take risks that most others would never consider in order to win a battle. Some might call it a suicidal tendency - but he wouldn’t dare call it that. He values his life and the power he’s managed to accumulate in his life span, however, tarnishing his reputation with a loss would be a bigger blow that losing an arm or healing up for a few months. Pride, in a way, seems to cloud his judgment at times, though he would contend that every injury was part of the plan. He also tends to be painfully independent, and will refuse help even when he needs it if he feels it will make him look weak in any way, shape, or form. Since childhood the urge to seek out conflict has both made him incredibly powerful and been the reason for his loss of his mother’s necklace (which he eventually regained, and wears in twin with Yukina’s), as well as countless injuries. The tendency to be attracted to conflict instead of stay away is, most likely, what will kill him in the end, but what demon who isn’t a God doesn’t have a fatal flaw?
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?
In Soul Campaign, Hiei will retain most of his demonic strength, speed, and swordsmanship. He is slightly stronger than his size gives away, but not necessarily able to smash things at will or toss large cars and buildings. His natural abilities will remain at their same levels, from his status as a master swordsmen to his strength and speed, mostly. They may be slightly dulled due to the universe difference, but it won't really be enough to completely alter his fighting style or killing ability.
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
He will still retain his social awkwardness and generally self-dangerous personality. However, he will lose all ability to summon the Dragon of the Darkness Flame or any of his Darkness Flame abilities due to his distance from Makai, as well as his Mortal Flame and Jagan abilities. His destructive capabilities will be greatly reduced with the loss, as the all-engulfing hell fire power can't be summoned and used on those he considers worthy. Not to mention the severe blow to his ego that he cannot summon the dragon. Losing the dragon ability leaves him more vulnerable against powerful enemies that can either meet or beat his speed, or could completely cripple all of his current options for a last resort, since he typically relies on his physical power to bring an enemy down, and then fire power to take them out.
[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Meister:
Hiei is, unfortunately, a little too headstrong and defiant to be a weapon. Though he does have a barely repressed urge to kill and fight, he likes to do so on his own terms and in his own way, and being controlled by others wouldn't quite provide the freedom of choice he expects and feels that he is utterly and completely entitled to. Being a weapon would only result in utter frustration and complete rebellion from Hiei, or the refusal to act or doing anything at all if it means serving others. Particularly if they are outside of his little group of 'allies.' Not that he would be all that inclined to help them in that way either, but still.
Meister Ability:
FERAL SOUL: Since Hiei is easily frustrated it would be simple for this ability to come to the forefront when fighting against enemies. The added stamina and damage resistance will also return him to somewhat of the levels he is used to back in his home world, which will lead to leagues of difference in his fighting ability at the time, though his enemies or training partners may not find it too agreeable.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Soul Description: Aggressive, tactician, cynical, misanthropic, disengaged, blunt
Soul Appearance:
Hiei's soul appearance is much like his own. His soul's shape is in the same generally spiked form as his hair, generally ovular in shape. It sort of resembles a porcupine, with tendrils pointing out at all angles in a mock of his 'hairstyle.' The spirit shares his star burst as well, a line of bright white through the pitch black that makes up the entirety of the soul in proper. Its only other feature is a singular purple eye located in the middle, that only opens occasionally. The mock Jagan will open from time to time and shine brightly, as if inspecting everyone around before closing again. Generally it's a very disconcerting little soul shape, and even the singular eye seems threatening.

First Person:
Listen. [coming into view of the video feed is a very irritated looking face, slanted red eye narrowed and commanding. he takes a moment to look to his right, some commotion there temporarily distracting his attention, most likely his team mates, or maybe just a random scuffle - at any rate - ]
If you fools would like to continue to survive in this disgusting little city and your ugly little lives, my sword had better be returned to me. [his eyes narrow a little more at the screen, as if glowering at whoever is watching will motivate them to find the missing sword or simply give him one out of intimidation.] Not that I need it to slaughter all of you until I find it, but it will be easier on the rest of you if you can die faster. I doubt anyone else would be anymore merciful than that. Consider it a moment of kindness if you want.
[again he's momentarily distracted by something to the side, eyes sliding again to the right before - ] Urameshi! [-the video blurs and then cuts.]
Third Person:
Another day in demon world, another few hours spent wasting demons that were far below his level. He called it 'pest control,' Mukuro called it 'anger issues.' Either way - it didn't really matter to him so long as it served it's purpose, and killing always served a purpose. All major threats to the Human and Demon worlds had been averted with the death of Sensui, but peace didn't necessarily sit well with the young fire demon. Mukuro often chuckled and called him young and restless, which he may have been. After all, he had just passed by the date of (or rather, what he presumed the date was, as Yukina had celebrated it once at Genkai's home) his birth 100 years ago not many days before. By demon standards he was but a child, and though the label did not sit well with him, he knew that the age of his physical body had nothing to do with the age of his mind and the sharpness of his senses. He had grown, too, out of his childish size. He couldn't be sure how far, as his clothes had been tailored the second they were a bit too short by all the sniveling rodents in Mukuro's compound. Yes, rodents was what they were, he'd decided. Always sniveling and trying to wait on him hand and foot because he had resumed his position with Mukuro for lack of anything else to do. Aimless battle had begun to seem tedious, though not unnecessary, and the training was more than sufficient to push his boundaries without returning to human world.
Which, he did every so often. Mostly at Kurama's request or Yukina's, and without the rest of Team Urameshi's knowledge. He was sure Urameshi had married that foolish girl by then, anyway, and that idiot Kazuma had apparently had enough brains to go on to human high school. How, he would never actually know. A rock in demon world was probably more intelligent than Kazuma Kuwabara, but then again, when had that sniveling little part of the world ever seen the sense in getting rid of their weakest children in favor of the strong and intelligent?
The food chain, as it were, seemed to be broken back in human world. Here, he thought, he could at least see dog eat dog in action. In action indeed from his precariously high spot in a tree, relaxed against the large cylindrical form at his back, arms propped behind his head. Yes, all of this was great and bloody, and the air wafted with that comforting scent of the place he called home, telling him he ought to take a nap and remind himself of all the reasons why he hate the place so that he could go back to training when he woke up - still the same as ever and refusing to go soft as the others had. Leaning back with a contemplative hum, the Jagan opened while his other eyes closed, keeping watch for anyone who thought themselves sly enough to sneak up on the master of the Darkness Flame.
Commotion, though, was what woke him, the shuffle of multiple bodies allowing him to wake in the rafters of some place completely new. The small, though, told him it was full of humans. With a growl he wondered if this was the doing of that meddlesome Koenma, and slid his way down the nearest roof support to alight on the floor, a cautious look around exposing no obvious threats. Maybe, then, it was time to seek out his human (or, part demon) comrade(s) amongst their own kind. "Urameshi I do not see what you find so attractive about living amongst these people." he mused aloud before shoving his way through the crowd, shouldering men, women, and children alike.
