I was going to spend these last two days packing before I leave for camp in that town, but then I realized, "Your grandma could pass away or lose the ability to speak while you're gone so you'd better interview her for the permanent record before it's too late". So I did. I've used two hour-long tapes that I ran straight through. It took two to hear the bare bones of her life story, though I'm thinking of having another filled with her opinions. She described all of my relatives as either: pistols, characters, or straight-shooters. But still, it's important to know what color eyes people had, how they died, how many pets they had, whether or not their house was pretty. My questions didn't get too intrusive, nothing worse than asking whether she wanted to have kids or if they just showed up (I was more tactful than that).
I also spent this afternoon finishing a retaining wall. Now, many people may mistake me for the mellowing sort, but I can be exacting and precise when I want. I needed all my spatial gifts to make everything flush and level ( I had a bubble level). It was easy enough to build since I used those interlocking blocks (like the ugly ones that replaced the stone in front of the VP house at [the] College). Dry-laid stone is still a lot cooler.
Also, I got back my senior pictures yesterday. I didn't look at them for a couple hours then I finally buckled down. Most of them don't look like me. There was a long discussion at the dinner table about which one I should use and which people should buy. Comments ranged from "You look more like yourself in that picture" - M, to "Don't use that as your picture, it looks like you're trying to be something you're not."- D. I mean, I don't normally wear a suit but somehow sitting in a leather chair is betraying my scruples and identity. The chair seems a lot better than the pose by the Coca-Cola sign. Either way, you know somebody's going to pose next to the Logue's Coke sign.
I'm packed now, but I still have a feeling that I'm forgetting something.
