I am doing research for my editorial, which duh, I chose flag desecration and all the information I found is very compelling. haha smart face now.
anyways, what I took from some of the info was that dissent in democracy is the sign of a healthy democracy. In fact, without political and social dissent you do not have a democracy. And I know this is risky to say without JB getting angry, but democracy when practiced correctly, is the most amazing form of government. The fact that anyone would want to take away rights that brave brave citizens have fought for since the 1700's is completely disrespectful to what this country stands for. Granted, while desecrating a flag is also disrespectful, in a way it is, in fact, the opposite. Exercising the rights given to us is in essence the most respectful thing we can do. Veterans who fought against totalitarian governments in the world wars even support the right of flag desecration. These people were told to fight for the principles of our country, to give the rights we have to people who still do not have it. To make laws against what so many gave their lives for in our own country is preposterous!
