Title: Kurt's Real Turn

Rating: PG-13

Pairings/Characters: Kurt and Rachel mainly. All of New Directions is mentioned, but they are merely figments of the imagination.

Warnings: Slightly crazy Kurt Hummel... (:

Disclaimer: I don't own Glee. If I did, Kurt and Karofsky would be together and have lots of threesomes with Puck. Rachel would have been killed in a drive by and Finn would have committed suicide because of Rachel's death... Is it obvious that I don't own Glee?

Summary: Here he is, boys! Here he is, world! Here's Kurt!

A/N: I listened to the full version of Rose's Turn the other day because we're singing it at a fundraiser for our theatre company. I realize that the entire song is so Kurt. I'm upset that RIB cut it like they did. So, I wanted to write it all out. Here's Kurt singing Rose's Turn again, but for a completely different reason.

After graduation, Rachel and him had made a pact to go to New York together to chase their dreams. The first few months had been exhausting in a whirlwind of auditions, part-time jobs, and comfort when someone didn't get the part they wanted.
One afternoon Rachel came tearing into their one bedroom apartment slamming doors and screaming and yelling about how Kurt had better get his ass out to the living room right now. Once out there he took in her flushed and tear stained cheeks, bright eyes, and hundred billion kilo-watt smile. Without any explanation, he knew what had happened.
He crossed the small room and picked her up, twirling them in circles. The rest of the night was spent celebrating at their favourite little cafe while Rachel regaled Kurt all about her audition for Elphaba in the revival cast of Wicked and instead of getting that role (apparently, she was more Galinda material, but they had already cast her) she was offered the role of Wendla in Spring Awakening.
That was ten years ago to the day. Once Rachel had hit the stage, she was huge. Everyone wanted her, only the best got her. Kurt had taken to being her manager since no one seemed to be in need of a countertenor. Now, ten years later, Rachel told Kurt that she was letting him go.
She was getting married to Broadway star Max Steinmann and his agent wanted to take on the power couple. She told Kurt that she was sorry that things weren't meant to last and that she was moving out on Saturday and into Max's house. Kurt couldn't help but feel like she had just broken up with him.
He stood on the stage at the Eugene O'Neill theatre and watched as she flounced to her dressing room backstage. The theatre seats were empty and he was alone, standing in the stage lights that had yet to be turned off. Anger filled him. He feels like the nerd in that horrible 80's movie, Sixteen Candles. He feels just like Rose from Gypsy...
Oh, god. He was Rose from Gypsy. He was the overbearing agent who tried to book Rachel in every show he could because he didn't make it. He was living vicariously through his friend and that when the tears started. He didn't blame Rachel for leaving him high and dry like this, but it didn't lessen the anger.
He did the only thing he could think of to relieve some of the pain. He started in on Rose's soliloquy.
"You want to know what I did it for? Because I was born to soon and started to late! That's why. With what I got in me I could've been better than than any of ya. What I got in me... What I've been holding down inside of me... Oh! If I ever let it out, there wouldn't be signs big enough. There wouldn't be lights bright enough."

Without hesitation he launched right into the song. "Here he is, boys! Here he is world! Here's Kurt!" The imaginary fanfare stared in Kurt's mind as was the music he was hearing. He closed his eyes and pictured every seat filled with a person. His dad, Carole, Finn, and Finn's wife Rebecca sitting in a box seat. And front row was Rachel Ber-. Rachel Steinmann. Kurt could feel his lips curving into a delightful snarl as his eyes landed on her.

"Curtain up! Light the lights! Play it, boys!" Kurt couldn't help as his body moved to the music. He ran his hands up and down his sides finally letting them stop and rest on his hips. "Ya either got it, or ya ain't. And, boys, I got it! Ya like it? Well, I got it!"
Rachel's jaw was on the floor and she looked pissed. It was as if she was being stood up on her own stage, which, in a way, that was exactly what was happening. He winked at her before continuing. "Some people got it and make it pay. Some people can't even give it away. This people's got it and this people's spreadin' it around! You either have it, or you've had it!" Kurt will later deny the fact that he stamped his foot but right now it was even registering what his body was doing.
We walked to the edge of the stage and sat trying to engage his audience. "Hello, everybody! My name is Rose! What's yours? How do you like them eggrolls, Mr. Steinmann? Hold your hats and hallelujah. Mama's gonna show it to you. Ready or not, shhh, here comes Mama." Kurt stood and walked to the back of the stage, swaying his hips as he went. He turned to look over his shoulder and smiled seductively at his audience before turning around and merely snapping his fingers while his body swayed to the music.
"Mama's talkin' loud. Mama's doin' fine. Mama's gettin' hot. Mama's goin' strong. Mama's movin' on. Mama's all alone. Mama doesn't care. Mama's lettin' loose. Mama's got the stuff. Mama's lettin' go..." Kurt looked to the back of the theatre and saw her. At least he thinks it's her. His mom is standing there looking so disappointed. "Mama?" She disappears and Kurt continues, a little less enthusiastically. "Mama's got the stuff. Mama's gotta move. Mama's gotta go..." There she is again. This time she's right beside Burt in the box seats. Burt doesn't seem to notice her standing. He's to bust holding Carole's hand and whispering something into her ear. "Mama? Mama?" He swallows hard as she moves to take a seat behind Burt in the only empty chair in their box. "Mama's gotta let go."
Kurt could hear the band change their tempo and he heard the familiar music start up. Last time he sang this had been back in his sophomore year of high school on the stage in the auditorium. He had no audience then, but now he was going to make them listen. All of them were going to listen to him. He looked back out in the crowd and saw the faces become clearer. Behind Rachel he could see Mister Schue and Miss Pillsbury. A little farther back was Puck and Lauren with Santana and Brittany. Artie, Mike, and Tina sat in the handicapped section off to the right while Quinn and Sam were in the last row in the back. Mercedes sat in the front row to Rachel's left and she looked so confused.
"Why did I do it? What did it get me? Scrapbooks full of me in the background. Give 'em love and what does it get ya? What does it get ya? One quick look as each of 'em leaves you. All your life and what does it get ya? Thanks a lot and out with the garbage. They take bows and you're battin' zero." He looked back at Rachel and watched as her eyes turned cold. This was it. This was there good-bye. He knew he would change the lyrics just like as he did back in that school auditorium.
"I had a dream. I dreamed it for you, Rach. It wasn't for me, Rachel. And if it wasn't for me then where would you be, Miss Rachel Berry?" He stood tall and proud. He let his anger and hurt show on his face. He let years of rejection from all of Broadway fill his mind and fuel his performance. He felt his arms and body repeating the same motion from so many years ago. It was as if he were that 16 year old boy who just wanted to be accepted.
"Well, someone tell me, when is it my turn? Don't I get a dream for myself? Starting now it's gonna be my turn. Gangway, world, get off of my runway! Starting now I bat a thousand! This time, boys, I'm taking the bows and everything's coming up Kurt! Everything's coming up Hummel! Everything's coming up Kurt this time for me!" He looked around the theatre and saw it all. So many marquees all bearing his name.
'The wonderful Kurt Hummel starring in...'
'The talented Kurt Hummel in...'
'Kurt Hummel in his big debut.'
'The Gershwin Theatre presents Kurt Hummel in Wicked!'
'Kurt Hummel, in his finale role, as Rose in Gypsy!'
It was all to much and yet not enough at the same time. He let the face splitting smile take over as tears rolled down his face. He was so choked with emotion the last few words were barely a whisper. "For me! For me! For me! For me! For me! For me!"
Before he even finished the final note, the audience were on their feet clapping and cheering for more. Kurt basked in the glory of being appreciated. He heard someone calling his name and saw Rachel looking at him with concern in her eyes.
He blinked a few times before the noises of the crowd were gone and all of the lights were out except for the stage lights. He turned to his right and saw his Rachel with her jacket over her arm and a confused look on her face. He looked back out into the theatre and saw the empty seats. He looked into the box seats where his family had been sitting. They were all gone, except for his mother.
"Kurt? Are you okay?" Rachel tentatively stepped towards him and that seemed to break his concentration from whatever he was staring at in the boxes.
"I'm fine, Rachel. Congratulations to you and Max. I'll be sure to send a wedding gift, but now I'm going home. I'm going back to Lima." And with that said, he turned his back to her and made his way back to their one room apartment to pack.

The End
