God bless the fall. TV Fridays are back!
So I just watched "Ringer." It was AWESOME.
Granted my expectations were pretty low, but that was some solid television. SMG was as good as ever - she was convincingly two different people, she had me in tears when she was crying about Sean, and she instantly won my affection. Plus, Bridget is kind of a terrific girl.
Siobhan, on the other hand... wow. What a heinous, evil person. She really set her sister up to be killed, didn't she? Anyway, I'm glad they revealed her at the end of the episode. It was kind of a given that she wasn't dead, given that this is TV and we didn't see a body. I'm glad they're not trying to shape that as some big reveal, but included it as a basic part of the show's premise.
Damn, Siobhan. What the heck were you doing with your life? I cannot wait to find out more, and this is definitely entering my weekly show rotation. Eeeee!!!! :-D It's so good to be back with SMG!
Vampire Diaries!!! "Birthday"
How is this show so good? How do they do it? It's beyond me. It's such a basic, and fairly trashy and shallow show, and yet it is SO RIVETING and emotionally wrenching and...sighhhhh. I just love it. OK, now let's try to break my reactions down:
1. I literally cannot handle seeing Stefan like that. I mostly looked away from the screen when he was being evil, because.... I just can't. It's like seeing Harry Potter turn evil or something. He's GOOD. That's his defining characteristic, and I love(d) him for it. It is so WRONG to see him this way, that i almost don't want to watch. But of course I do.
2. I'll be honest, I don't find it entirely plausible that Stefan would do all of this. Would he really have weighed his brother's life against the lives of all the people he knew he was going to have to kill, and still made this decision? OK, maybe in the heat of the moment. But now? I honestly would expect Stefan to kill himself rather than turn this evil. OTOH, Klaus would probably kill everyone he loves in revenge - and Stefan knows this - so that's probably what's keeping him to this deal. I hope that's the case, and they spell that out at some point.
3. OH MY GOD ELENA AND STEFAN STOP BREAKING MY FREAKING HEART. IT'S GETTING OLD. Of course I cried at the end, because my goodness, she just loves him so much. And he just loves her so much. And.... sigh. I thought about that when Klaus was talking about how those family bonds can never be broken - and yet, you could just see on Stefan's face that he wasn't thinking of Damon, he was thinking of Elena. And as long as Klaus thinks Elena's dead, she and Stefan will be safe. But as soon as he finds out, he's going to want Stefan to kill Elena or do something horrible to her. Sigh. I'm not looking forward to that.
4. Mommy Lockwood, stay away from Caroline, damn you! Even if she does have a really boring love triangle (though I guess that's mostly resolved now) and I could still care less about Tyler, and the whole "horny times a zillion" thing was just gross. Despite all that, she remains awesome! I loved her at the party - both in trying to be sweet to Elena, and in shoving all the humans aside so carelessly/awesomely. Heh. Adorbs.
5. OH! I guess that was yet another dig at Twilight, wasn't it? In a way. How both Caroline and Tyler have this crazy scary horniness, so neither one is tearing the other one apart. That's kinda nice.
6. The violence on this show is getting out of control. I HATE IT. Plus, of course, it's entirely against women. Please stop trying to make me (and others) enjoy watching women being dismembered, falling to their deaths, etc etc. It's disgusting and it's dangerous and, show, you are way better than that. Plus, this is for teens. Isn't there any censorship anymore?
7. Just don't go back to making all black people your victims. That sucked, too.
8. Along similar lines, I have issues with the lack of justice for crimes committed by our heroes. The show seems to think that being sad is appropriate poetic justice for Damon and Stefan, but, erm, no. If they are our HEROES they need to 1) stop killing people and 2) expend a LOT of effort trying to make up for it. And no, reassembling the body parts of people you've murdered does NOT count, thank you very much.
9. I...actually sympathized with Damon in this episode? Like, a lot? Which I guess was a given because 1) they HAVE to make him more sympathetic, so we can root for him, and 2) he and Stefan have switched roles, obvs. Still, I really felt his pain - and it DIDN'T feel like manpain - when he was tearing apart his room.
10. ELENA I LOVE YOU. That sentiment isn't expressed often enough, but that girl is wonderfully mature and such a good person and I love love love her to pieces. The way she's taking care of her brother ("go talk to him, would you? He looks up to you.") and handling herself and just everything. It's actually really lovely watching her grow since season 1, because I think she has grown (a little bit).
11. And I wanted to end on that, but I forgot one thing - Alaric, you suck balls. I know that, since you're a dude and therefore no one expects anything of you, but you really suck ass. Elena and Jeremy are KIDS. What the hell is your problem?
12. OK, and I wanted to say one more thing - Jeremy! I LOVE this twist and can't wait for more. Mainly because I loved both Vicky and Anna. Also I love Jeremy, so it's all a big happy family. But you know, I really wish they would do more with Bonnie. I read an interview with the writers, and the interviewer (wonderfully) said that fans really want some more development / interesting storylines for Bonnie. Their response was something like, "Oh yeah, we have loads more in store for Bonnie. Especially because her boyfriend is going to be seeing his dead ex-girlfriends everywhere." And I'm like, no, you douches, that's a *Jeremy* storyline. Not a Bonnie one. But this show is perpetually retarded when it comes to dealing with black people, so big freaking surprise. I love that their solution to the mystery of what goes on at her father's house is "it's more boring than watching paint dry." Wow, way to take advantage of a necessary plot element, assholes.
13. OK, I don't want to end with calling the writers assholes. Because THIS SHOW IS AWESOMESAUCE AND I WILL BE DYING UNTIL NEXT WEEK BECAUSE I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHERE THEY TAKE US. Plus, I want MORE STEFAN!!! Well, not if he's killing me. I want MORE STEFAN TRYING TO RESIST KLAUS AND HOLD ONTO HIS HUMANITY, PLEASE!!
Luckily I have another episode of "Awkward" to tide me over. But I'm going to go watch that right now, so it's not a huge help. Heh.
