Tonight I sign the lease on my new home. It's not a perfect home but I think I'm generally going to like it there. Can move in starting immediately, though I don't have to be out of my old place until Oct 1. I understand your concern but every person coming into the house won't be tramping through my bedroom. To come in the house you come up the stairs and are in a long hallway. Doors on the left lead to each of the main rooms, so it's easy enough to close the door to the front room and leave the door to the 2nd and 3rd rooms open, which are a natural place for a living-room, anyway. Granted there are french-doors separating the front room from the 2nd room, which, knowing me, I'll generally leave open, but hang linen curtains from those doors and close them periodically, and I'll have bedroom privacy when I want it.
There are 4 major rooms in the house, front room (bedroom), separated from 2nd room by french doors, with a large opening (pocket-door) leading to 3rd room, with a normal-sized doorway into the large kitchen. 2nd and 3rd rooms will be living room and library/craft/project/available-for-guests rooms.
There's a small room in the front of the house, over the front-door area, which isn't good for all that much, really. I thought about turning it into an office or a sewing room but I don't need an office and I'm less likely to sew if I have to "go somewhere" to do it, so I'm strongly leaning toward just using that small room as a large closet/storage. Though there's plenty of storage space in the basement I must admit to being a very lazy person and thus am not likely to want to run two flights of stairs very often. Laundry will be annoying enough...
