Grammy was my best friends grandmother. Paul's mom spent most of the time out of the country on business so Grammy basically raised Paul and his brother. I spent more time at Pauls in highschool that I did at my own home. We would get drunk in the basement and smoke in the backyard while Grammy spent all night reading in her blue nightgown and smoking in the kitchen. Raising a bunch of hell-raisers like us wasn't easy for her. Not only did she feed and keep the three of us in line, she practically adopted the rest of our neighborhood friends. She wasn't afraid to smack us around if we got out of line, but everyone loved her like their own grandmother.
She died last night of lung cancer at the age of 87. As a testamate to her strong souther roots, she refused treatment. Prefering to live out her last days in peace with her family. But before her death she was able to spend the summer at a beach house with 30 of her closest friends along with five generations of children, grand children, and great grandkids. Sorry to bring everyone down so close to Christmas. I just wanted to reminisce a little.
