Shuuhei rounded the corner and saw an unsual sight. He stood in the doorway and observed the scene before him. It looked like Hanataro was trying to waltz with his broom.
“What are you doing?”
“Practicing,” replied a very embarrassed Hanataro who then added, “I’m sorry.”
Shuuhei smiled. “It’s okay. But I doubt that broom is a very good dance partner.” Hanataro proceeded to explain that he couldn’t possibly trouble anyone by asking them to help teach him, especially with such short notice, since the Fourth Squad Ball was tomorrow evening. He apologized again for practicing with the broom while he was supposed to be cleaning. Before Hanataro could apologize a third time, the Vice Captain spoke up, “Well, I’m off for the rest of the day if you’d like to try dancing with a real person.”
“Really??”
“Really,” Shuuhei said as he held out his hand. The grateful 7th seat took Shuuhei’s hand and the lesson commenced. Not only was Shuuhei a good dancer, he was also a good teacher. Slowly and with great patience he helped Hanatarto master the graceful ballroom dance.
Shuuhei watched as Hanataro ran off back to 4th Squad after their lesson had concluded.
“That was very sweet of you, Hisagi-fukutaichou,” said a voice from behind him.
“Unohana-taichou?!”
“It’s just a shame that he won’t be able to show off his newfound dancing skills.”
“What do you mean?”
“He is the only one going to the Fourth Squad Ball without a date.”

Hanataro stood against the wall watching all the others dancing, drinking, and chatting over their punch. He didn’t really mind being a wallflower. He was content to watch and was just glad that everyone seemed to be having a good time. Still, some little part of him wanted to be on that dance floor. Suddenly Hanataro was aware that he was not alone. Shuuhei was standing next to him.
“What are you doing here?” asked a somewhat confused Hanataro. This was a 4th Squad function after all.
“Unohana-taichou told me I could drop by after I got done with work if I wanted to.”
“Oh, I see.”
After a brief but awkward silence Shuuhei spoke again.
“So, were you planning on holding this wall up all night or did you plan on dancing at some point?”
Hanataro looked down at the floor blushing, unable to come up with a response. He didn’t want to admit that he didn’t have a date, and he wasn’t entirely sure why he was blushing so much.
His eyes widened a little as he suddenly realized that he had feelings of something more than just friendship for the man standing next to him. Wait, Shuuhei was moving. He looked up, eyes still wide, to see the Vice Captain standing in front of him. Hanataro still couldn’t find any words, not even to ask what was going on.
Shuuhei held out his hand as the orchestra began to strike up the waltz.
“Hanataro, may I have this dance.”
Hanataro’s blush deepened as he placed his hand inside Shuuhei’s and walked with him out onto the dance floor.
