On Sunday, celebrated Muppet Kermit the Frog teamed up with RAN, Global Exchange, and The Ruckus Society to kick off the New Year in fuel-efficient style at the North American International Auto Show in downtown Detroit.
Speaking candidly (and regretfully) about his role over the past year as a spokesfrog for Ford Motor Company in Ford's Escape Hybrid commercials, Kermit told many in attendance "it's easy pretending to be green, but Ford needs to commit to leading the industry in fuel economy."
During the first press day with over 6,000 reporters at the auto show, Kermit walked towards the main entrance of the show. After shaking hands and being welcomed by pedestrians, security guards and reporters, Kermit and five other Freedom From Oil supporters attempted to enter the main entrance of the auto show but were immediately stopped by security. Not willing to be silenced, Kermit held a street theatre performance at the main entrance highlighting his disappointment of Ford.
Before the auto show, activists encouraged General Motors to shift their focus from PR to mass production of fuel efficient vehicles by projecting illuminated guerrilla billboard projections in front of GM headquarters and distributed flyers in the GM parking lot and at nearby hotels.
One of many projections aimed at pressuring General Motors
NAIAS is among the most prestigious auto shows in the world and it's estimated that automakers spent $200 million on showroom displays, events, and marketing. The big event is happening in the heart of Detroit and Ford Motor Company, Daimler Chrysler and General Motors are working hard to regain customers and profitability. Suffering from their lowest collective market share ever in 2006, largely due to their continued production large, gas-guzzling cars, trucks and SUVs, the Big Three are increasingly pushing to change their image with an increasingly fuel-conscious public.
The Road to Recovery starts in Detroit, so stay tuned for more exciting news about the campaign!
